Stanislaus Rallies To Beat Otters In Four

Camacho reaches career-high digs for the second consecutive night.

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay looked ready to capitalize on Friday's win over Chico State, but visiting Stanislaus State had other plans. The Warriors rallied after dropping the first set to earn a 24–26, 25–22, 25–21, 25–15 win over the Otters Saturday in The Kelp Bed.

The Otter middles had a big night, with Lilly Bandle (Jackson, Wisc./West Bend East HS) and Malia Thorne (Newport Harbor HS) combining to hit .341 with 20 kills. Right side hitter Abby Witzansky (West Torrance HS) matched Bandle's team-high 11 kills.

But the Stanislaus block had an answer for CSUMB's red-hot outside attack, holding the Otter left sids to just 11 total kills.

The Otters led 24–20 in the opening frame before Stanislaus saved four set points. A Warrior service error ended the rally and a Malia Peterson (Redondo Union HS) kill gave CSUMB the set.

But the late rally brought a momentum shift in the visitor's favor. The Warrior then used a 7–2 spurt midway through set two to break an 11–11 tie en route to leveling the match.

A Lauren Hamilton kill broke a 5–5 tie in favor of the visitors early in the third set and Stanislaus never trailed again in the match. The Warriors opened the fourth set with an 8–2 run and never let the Otters closer than four points in closing out the match.

Junior libero Macey Camacho (Chandler, Ariz./Basha HS) capped a big week in the back row with a career-high 19 digs. Thorne led the Otter net defense with three blocks.

FRIDAY'S TURNING POINT WAS… Trailing 24–20 in the first set, Stanislaus staved off four set points to force a deuce game. Although the Otters held on for the win, the Warriors rode that momentum shift to three consecutive set wins and the victory.

CAMACHO DIGS IT… After digging a career-high 18 balls in Friday's win over Chico State, Macey Camacho set her career record again Saturday with 19 digs against Stanislaus State. She is averaging a healthy 4.7 digs per set over her last three matches and has reached double figures 13 times in 18 appearances this season.

PETERSON EYES 600-KILL CLUB… What once seemed unreachable now appears well within reach as Malia Peterson moved up to No. 14 on the Otter career kills list with 577 after Saturday's match. She is looking to become just the 13th player in program history to reach 600 kills.

THE WAR AT THE NET RAGES ON: Lilly Bandle and Malia Thorne continue to race each other up the Otter career blocking charts. Saturday against Stanislaus State, Thorne managed 3–1 edge. They each had one block assist, with that race still in Bandle's favor, 120–117. On the total blocks list, Thorn pulled to within one at 151–150. Thorne increased her advantage on the block solos list to 35–31

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Lilly Bandle/Malia Thorne/Abby Witzansky 11.5; KILLS: Lilly Bandle/Abby Witzansky 11; BLOCKS: Malia Thorne 3; ACES: Maya Giannini/Sofia MacPherson/Malia Peterson 1; DIGS: Macey Camacho 19.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 4-match homestand Friday when they host Cal State Dominguez Hills for a nonconference match. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.
