Otters Bounce Back With 73-62 Win Over Bobcats

Moreno Ortiz leads five in double figures with 18 points

SEASIDE, Calif. — An 18-point night from junior Jennifer Moreno Ortiz (San Diego/Sonoma State) helped the Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team bounce back into the win column with a 73–62 win over UC Merced Thursday nigh in The Kelp Bed.

With the win, the Otters evened their record at 9–9 overall while improving to 6–7 in CCAA play. Merced dropped to 6–14 and 3–10.

Riley Walls (Clovis West HS) knocked down an early 3-pointer to open the scoring, and the Otters never relinquished the lead. They led by as many as 15 points during a season-best 29-point first quarter. That trailed only the 30 points they scored in the third quarter of a win over Cal-Maritime as their biggest quarter of the season.

The Otters led by 18 (58–40) after three quarters before the Merced began to nibble away at the lead. The Bobcats closed to within eight midway through the final period, but that's as close as they would get.

Malaysia Lucero (Atwater/Golden Valley HS) added 11 points while Aajah Slocum (Fresno/Merced College), Walls and Cheyanne Whitfield (West L.A. College/Lynwood HS) each chipped in 10.

Slocum led CSUMB with six assists as the Otters just missed their season high, finishing with 17. She also led a balanced effort on the boards with a team-high seven rebounds.

The Otters will continue their 4-game homestand Saturday when they host Stanislaus State. Tip-off will be at 1 p.m. as the opener of doubleheader action with the Otter men.
