CARSON, Calif. —
One night after playing its cleanest match of the season, Cal State Monterey Bay struggled to keep the ball in play in a 25–20, 21–25, 25–13, 19–25, 15–13 loss at Cal State Dominguez Hills in the Torodome.

The Otters matched their season high with 33 errors Saturday after making a season-low 12 Friday in Pomona. They also managed a season-low 9.6 kills per set to allow the Toros to escape with the victory.

Saturday's match marked CSUMB's sixth 5-setter of the season. The Otters have had tough luck in such situations, going 0–5 in those matches after opening the season with a 3–2 win over Dominican University.

Freshmen outside hitters Zoe Haan (Phoenix/Sunnyslope HS) and Juliette D'Eliseo (Carlsbad/Sage Creek HS) provided the bulk of CSUMB's offense, with Haan (15) and D'Eliseo (12) accounting for more than half of the Otters' 48 kills.

The Otter net defense more than held its own with Lilly Bandle (Jackson, Wisc./West Bend East HS) and Malia Thorne (Newport Harbor HS) posting seven blocks apiece. Senior libero Mia Dilley (Fresno CC/Clovis East HS) led the back row with a season-high 17 digs.

Dominguez Hills jumped to big leads early in the first and third sets, never giving CSUMB a chance to get back in either contest. As they've done all season, the Otters shook those losses off to rally in the even frames. They scored the final six points in the second set to put that one away before closing the fourth with a 7–1 run to force the winner-take-all fifth.

CSUMB led for most of the fifth set until the Toros scored four consecutive points to even the score at 10–10. CSUMB held its final lead at 13–12, but an Otter service error followed by two strong serves from Nina Robles helped the Toros close the match.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Toro outside hitter Bailey Fuches followed an Otter service error with back-to-back kills for the final three points.

OTTERS KEEP GOING THE DISTANCE… The Otters went the distance for the sixth time in 11 matches this season in Saturday's thriller at Cal State Dominguez Hills. For those keeping track at home, that already is tied for the fourth most times they've played five in a season. The Otter record is 13 such matches during the 2013 campaign.

OTTER BLOCK PARTY… The Otters totalled 15.0 team blocks Saturday at Dominguez Hills, the fourth-most blocks in a match in Otter history. They represent the most in a match since setting the team record with 18.0 blocks in a 5-set win at Concordia-Portland on Sept. 6, 2019.

ALL OUT OF ACES… The Otters didn't record their first (and only) ace of the night until Mia Dilley found the floor to give them a 10–6 lead in the fifth set. That ties the program record for fewest aces in a 5-set match, set back at Cal State East Bay in 2018.

DILLEY DIGS IT… With a season-high 17 digs Saturday at Cal State Dominguez Hills, Mia Dilley moved into the Otter career Top 25 for digs at 446. She needs 54 more to become the 23rd player in program history to reach 500 career digs.

DOUBLE THE FUN… With 15 kills Saturday at Cal State Dominguez Hills, Zoe Haan has recorded double-figure kills in 10 of her first 11 collegiate matches. The last Otter to accomplish that feat was Jackie Wahl, who did it in 14 of 15 matches from Sept. 20 through Nov. 8 last season.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Zoe Haan 16.0; KILLS: Zoe Haan 15; BLOCKS: Lilly Bandle/Malia Thorne 7; ACES: Mia Dilley 1; DIGS: Mia Dilley 17.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return to the friendly confines of The Kelp Bed to begin a 3-match homestand, starting with Stanislaus State Friday (Oct. 3) at 5 p.m. Tickets are available online at OtterAthletics.com/tickets. Fans who can't make it to The Kelp Bed can watch on the FloSports Network (OtterAthletics.com/watch).
