Defending Champs Tame Otters In Pomona

Zoe Haan leads MB with 11 kills

POMONA, Calif. — Defending CCAA champion Cal Poly Pomona played suffocating defense to earn a 25–20, 25–22, 25–18 win over Cal State Monterey Bay Friday night in Kellogg Arena.

CSUMB got another double-digit performance from freshman outside hitter Zoe Haan (Phoenix/Sunnyslope HS), who finished with a team-high 11 kills. But despite recording a season-low 12 errors, the Otters couldn't unlock the Bronco defense.

Pomona entered the night ranked second in the CCAA averaging 15.94 digs per set. The Broncos averaged an even 18 per set in this one. Their net defense chipped in seven total blocks, accounting for more than half of CSUMB's errors.

The Otters stayed close throughout the opening set before Pomona scored the final three points to take a 1–0 match lead. CSUMB led for most of the second set until a Charlotte Koerber kill started a 5–0 Bronco spurt that broke a 15–15 tie.

CSUMB scored the first three points of the third set before a 7–0 Pomona run dispelled any thought of an Otter comeback.

In addition to Haan, freshman Juliette D'Eliseo (Carlsbad/Sage Creek HS) put down eight kills for CSUMB. Junior middle blocker Malia Thorne (Newport Harbor HS) hit .455 (6–1–11) with a match-high four blocks. Sophomore libero Macey Camacho (Chandler, Ariz./Basha HS) anchored the back row with 12 digs.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Elle Walker and Kylie Leopard combined for a block that capped a 5–0 run and gave Pomona a 19–10 lead in the third set.

THORNE GOES SOLO… Malia Thorne moved up three spots on the Otter career block list by posting four Friday at Cal Poly Pomona. She's now alone in 34th place with 80 career blocks. She needs 19 more to catch Baylie Pierson for a spot in the Top 25.

TAKING CARE OF THE ROCK… The Otters posted a season-low 12 attack errors Friday at Pomona, eclipsing their previous low of 14 set in a sweep of Cal State East Bay on Sept. 18. It marked the fewest errors in a match since they made 11 in a sweep of UC Merced on Sept. 7, 2024.

DOUBLE THE FUN… With 11 kills Friday at Cal Poly Pomona, Zoe Haan has recorded double-figure kills in nine of her first 10 collegiate matches. She began the week ranked No. 3 in the CCAA in kills per set at 3.46.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Zoe Haan 12.0; KILLS: Zoe Haan 11; BLOCKS: Malia Thorne 4; ACES: Malia Thorne 2; DIGS: Macey Camacho 12.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their brief SoCal roadtrip Saturday at Cal State Dominguez Hills with first serve at 5 p.m. CSUMB returns home to host Stanislaus State on Oct. 3.
