Otter Comeback Ends In Dramatic 5-Set Loss

Haan’s 21 kills, Cann’s 59 assists not enough vs. UC Merced

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay played its fifth 5-set match in 10 outings this season, dropping a heart-breaker to UC Merced 19–25, 25–12, 25–23, 21–25, 18–16 Saturday night in The Kelp Bed.

The Otters pulled away late in the fourth set to force the winner-take-all fifth. Once there, they saved five match points, rallying back from 14–11 down, before Merced finally held on at the end.

Freshman Zoe Haan (Phoenix/Sunnyslope HS) reached 20 kills for the second time in her young collegiate career, pacing all attackers with 21. Junior middle blocker Lilly Bandle (Jackson, Wisc./West Bend East HS) added a career-high 13 kills.

Junior setter Maya Cann (Chico HS/Feather River College) directed the offense with her third double-double, posting a season-high 59 assists and 12 digs.

Except the second set, in which the Bobcats raced to an 8–2 lead, the match was tightly contested throughout. In the end, it turned on Merced's ability to play mistake-free ball. The Bobcats made just 15 hitting errors in the match compared to 32 by the Otters.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Ayana Ruffin and Kyra Miller combined for a block on Merced's sixth match-point opportunity.

GOING THE DISTANCE, PART I… Saturday's match marked the fifth time in 10 outings this season that the Otters have gone the full five sets. CSUMB won its season opener over Dominican in five sets, but has lost its last four such matches, the last two in deuce games.

GOING THE DISTANCE, PART II… CSUMB's five 5-set matches already match the seventh most such matches in a season in Otter history. The Otter record is 13 5-setters in 2013.

CANN MAKES HER MARK IN RECORD BOOK… Maya Cann's 59 assists Saturday versus UC Merced ranks No. 3 all-time in the CSUMB record book for assists in a match. Kelsey Johnston owns the top two marks, with 62 versus Cal Baptist and 61 at Cal State East Bay, both in 2013.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Zoe Haan 23.5; KILLS: Zoe Haan 21; BLOCKS: Lilly Bandle/Juliette D'Eliseo 3; ACES: Juliette D'Eliseo/Zoe Haan 2; DIGS: Maya Cann 12.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head to Southern California for a pair of matches next week, beginning Friday (Sept. 26) at defending CCAA champion Cal Poly Pomona. CSUMB returns home to host Stanislaus State on Oct. 3
