Otters Open CCAA with Sweep Of East Bay

CSUMB earns first sweep of the season

HAYWARD, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team opened California Collegiate Athletic Association play with its most complete performance of the season, earning a 25–22, 25–23, 25–18 sweep of Cal State East Bay Thursday in Pioneer Gym.

Freshman Juliette D'Eliseo (Carlsbad/Sage Creek HS) led the Otter offense with 13 kills and just missed her third consecutive double-double with nine digs. Fellow freshman Zoe Haan (Phoenix, Ariz./Sunnyslope HS) saw her streak of double-digit kill matches end at seven when she finished with eight.

Junior setter Maya Cann (Chico HS/Feather River College) ran the efficient Otter attack with 34 assists and four aces.

A slow Otter start allowed East Bay to forge an early 9–5 lead, but CSUMB quickly found its footing, using an 8–2 run to take a 13–11 lead it wouldn't relinquish. In fact, the Otters wouldn't trail again until the Pioneers claimed a 2–1 advantage early in the third set.

A Jenna Kraft (Rocklin/Whitney HS) kill started an 8–0 run that wiped out East Bay's final lead of 8–7 in the third set, pointing the way to ultimate victory.
 

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Maya Cann's fourth service ace of the night capped an 8–0 run that gave CSUMB a 15–9 lead in the third. The Pioneers never got within four points for the balance of the match.

HOW SWEEP IT IS, PART I… CSUMB's sweep of East Bay Thursday night was its first sweep of the season and its first sweep since a 25–14, 25–14, 25–17 win over UC Merced on Sept. 7, 2024. It was the first Otter road sweep since a 25–21, 25–22, 25–16 sweep at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sept. 22, 2018.

HOW SWEEP IT IS, PART II… Thursday's 25–22, 25–23, 25–18 sweep at Cal State East Bay Thursday night was CSUMB's first sweep in Pioneer Gym since Sept. 27, 2006. For historical context, CSUMB Head Coach Courtney (Taubert) Materazzi and East Bay Head Coach Kim (Sordello) Lambert both were playing for the Otters in that match.

ALL GOOD THINGS MUST END… Freshman outside hitter Zoe Haan saw the her CSUMB record-setting streak of double-figure kill matches to start her career end at seven Thursday at East Bay. She still leads the team with 114 kills and 129.0 points this season.
