SoCal Trip Ends In Heartbreak

Otters fall in five to APU and in four at Biola

LA MIRADA, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team fell in a pair of heartbreakers to close its Southern California roadtrip Saturday afternoon in Biola University's Chase Gym. The Otters fell 16–14 in the fifth set to drop their morning match against Azusa Pacific before succombing to the host Eagles in a 26–24 fourth set to close the day.

APU took that match 25–16, 25–27, 25–23, 23–25, 16–14. Biola won 25–16, 25–18, 17–25, 26–24. CSUMB dropped its tournament opener Friday at Vanguard University, 23–25, 25–21, 25–20, 25–21.

Freshman Zoe Haan (Phoenix/Sunnyslope HS) led CSUMB with 37 kills, reaching double figures in all three matches. Junior Malia Peterson (Redondo Union HS) put down a career-high 18 kills Friday at Vanguard. Junior Lilly Bandle (Jackson, Wisc./West Bend East HS) put down a career-high nine blocks in the finale at Biola

VANGUARD UNIVERSITY def. CSUMB 3–1 (23–25, 25–21, 25–20, 25–21)
The Otters couldn't sustain a hot start as the host Lions roared back to take the match in four. Malia Peterson's career-high 18 kills led both teams. Zoe Haan added 13 kills while Lilly Bandle matched her (then) career high with seven blocks.

AZUSA PACIFIC def. CSUMB 3–2 (25–16, 25–27, 25–23, 23–25, 16–14)
Consecutive kills by Malia Thorne gave CSUMB the opportunity to serve for the match at 14–13 in the fifth, but the Cougars scored the final three points to take the nail-biter. Freshman Juliette D'Eliseo got her first real taste of collegiate action and found it to her liking, smashing 20 kills in just four sets. Junior opposite Abby Witzansky added a career-high 16 kills.

BIOLA UNIVERSITY def. CSUMB 3–1 (25–16, 25–18, 17–25, 26–24)
The Otters saved two match points, but couldn't get over the hump as Biola held our for the 4-set victory. Zoe Haan and Juliette D'Eliseo led the offense with 13 and 11 kills respectively. Lilly Bandle enjoyed one of the best blocking efforts in program history, stuffing nine attacks, the third most ever by an Otter.

GOING THE DISTANCE: Four of CSUMB's first seven matches have gone the full five sets. As a point of comparison, the Otters played just four 5-setters in all of the 2024 season (going 2–2 in those matches). In case you're wondering, the Otter record for 5-set matches in one season is 13, set during the 2013 season (CSUMB won eight of those en route to a program-record 18 wins under Head Coach Jody Garry).

HAAN CONTINUES TO MAKE HISTORY: Freshman outside hitter Zoe Haan has reached double-figure kills in each of her first seven collegiate matches. No Otter freshman can match that accomplishment.

BANDLE ON THE BLOCKS: Junior middle blocker Lilly Bandle was credited with nine total blocks Saturday at Biola University. That mark ranks No. 3 in CSUMB history for all matches and No. 2 for blocks in a 4-set match. The last Otter to block nine balls in a match was Kea Veenendaal, who did it in a 4-setter at Cal Poly Humboldt on Oct. 28, 2023.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters open California Collegiate Athletic Association play when they head to Hayward for the Battle of the Bays at Cal State East Bay on Thursday (Oct. 18). First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.
