SANTA BARBARA – The No. 19-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team opened NCAA postseason play with a 7-3 victory over San Francisco State at Russ Carr Field on Thursday.
Behind a solid seven innings from
Nate Rohlicek and a 3-for-4 effort from
Max Farfan, the Otters opened the regional by taking down the Gators for the third game in a row and for the sixth time this season.
Rohlicek allowed three runs on six hits and struck out five to earn his fifth win of the season.
Drew Aguiar closed the door with two innings of one-hit relief.
CSUMB banged out 10 hits as Farfan recorded a double and a triple on top of an RBI single.
KW Quilici also posted a multi-hit game, batting 2-for-4 in the winning effort.
The Otters opened the regional by plating three runs in the opening frame. CSUMB took advantage of a SFSU miscue as
Jacob Dressler scored on a throwing error on an attempted pickoff.
Cole Murchison continued right where he left off from the CCAA Tournament by driving home Quilici on a single up the middle and then Farfan plated
Jaden Sheppard on a single to left.
The Otters expanded its lead to 4-0 when
Noah Zertuche hit a deep sac-fly to center to score Farfan.
The Gators got on the board and cut the Otter lead in half when Daniel Murillo hit a two-run homer.
CSUMB promptly answered with a homerun of its own in the bottom half when
Javier Felix cleared the tall wall in right to give the Otters a 5-2 lead. The homer was the senior's 11
th on the season.
The Otters then scored single runs in the ensuing two innings as Farfan scored on a Zertuche fielder's choice and Dressler crossed the plate on a Felix double play.
CSUMB will face host Westmont tomorrow at Noon.
