SANTA BARBARA – The No. 12-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team suffered its first loss of the postseason, falling 8-1 to No. 12 Westmont Friday afternoon at Russ Carr Field.
The loss means the Otters have work to do to advance to their third straight Super Regional, needing to defeat the host Warriors twice tomorrow.
Westmont used the longball to power their way past CSUMB. The Warriors hit three home runs and a double as the extra-base hits accounted for six of their eight runs.
The Otters fell behind quickly 4-0 as the Warriors hit a two-out two-run homer in the first and then scored two more in the third to take the early lead. They pulled away by plating four more in the eighth.
CSUMB got its lone run of the ballgame when senior
KW Quilici smashed his 12
th home run of the season, going opposite field for the solo shot in the sixth. Quilici accounted for three of the six Otter hits on the day.
Henry Proger (5-3) was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs on four hits in three innings.
The Otters will look to win two games tomorrow as first pitch of game one is scheduled for 11 a.m.
