Otters Survive, Advance At WWPA Championship

CSUMB upends Salem, 11-8, faces Biola in Saturday’s semis

SALEM, W.Va. — Cal State Monterey Bay gave a complete effort to upend host and No. 2 seed Salem University 11–8 at the WWPA Championship Tournament Friday morning at the Peak Health Aquatics Center at Mylan Park.

The win gives CSUMB its third-ever berth in the WWPA semifinals, including its second in the last three seasons. The Otters will take on No. 1 seed Biola University Saturday at 1 p.m. (EDT) for the right to advance to Sunday's championship match.

Senior Allyson Ainsworth (West Sacramento/River City HS) continued her torrid run of recent play with a match-high six points, including her third hat trick of the season. First team All-WWPA pick Autumn Day (Murrieta Valley HS) added four points on two goals and two assists. Alex Harris (Davis Senior HS) scored a goal and won all three of her sprints.

Freshman goalkeeper Marissa White (Union City/Mission San Jose HS) stopped seven of 15 shots for her eighth win.

"We were really confident going into today's game," said CSUMB Head Coach Emily Schmit. "We knew it was going to be a 4-quarter game and needed to stick to our game plan, which we did. The energy on the bench unmatched."

The teams traded haymakers early, with five different Otters scoring while CSUMB survived the first period with a 5–4 edge. The Otters landed a body blow in the second, scoring four unanswered goals in the first four minutes to extend their lead to 9–4.

The CSUMB defense did its part, putting the clamps down and holding the Tigers to a single score over a 19-minute span to build a 10–5 lead three minutes into the final period. Salem never got closer than four goals until its final possession of the match.
