Late Run Lifts Biola Past Otters, 9-6

Autumn Day reaches 50-goal mark with two scores

LA MIRADA, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay and Biola University played another tight game Wednesday afternoon at the La Mirada Regional Aquatics Center. For the second consecutive meeting, the Eagles were able to pull away late to earn a 9–6 victory.

When the teams met two weeks back in Seaside, Biola broke an 11–11 tie in the fourth quarter with a pair of late goals to survive. In Wednesday's rematch, the Eagles ended the third on a 4–0 run to come from behind and earn their ninth consecutive win in the series.

Things were looking bright for the visitors when freshman Emma Sosa (Tustin/Foothill HS) and junior Autumn Day (Murrieta Valley HS) scored midway through the second and third periods to give the Otters a 3–2 lead. The CSUMB defense, meanwhile, was putting the clamps down, holding Biola scoreless for nearly 10 full minutes.

But the Eagles rallied to score four times in the final 2:58 of the third quarter to regain a 6–3 lead. Day scored on CSUMB's first possession of the fourth to trim the deficit to two goals, but that's as close as the Otters would get.

Day and Sosa scored a pair of goals apiece to pace the CSUMB attack. With her two markers, Day became the 15th player in Otter history to record 50 or more goals in a single season.

Natalie Mancinelli (El Dorado Hills/Santa Barbara CC) also chipped in a goal and an assist.

Freshman Marissa White (Union City/Mission San Jose HS) returned to the cage and made 11 saves. Stella Martin (Clovis West HS) led the field defense with a pair of steals.

CSUMB will take the weekend off before heading to the Central Valley to close the regular season with games at Fresno Pacific (Apr. 12) and UC Merced (Apr. 13).
