Otter Split Regular Season Finales

CSUMB falls at FPU, 13-11; wins at UC Merced 21-7

MERCED, Calif. — Cal State Monterey split its regular season finales in the Central Valley this weekend, losing a 13–11 nail-biter at Fresno Pacific Saturday before completing a season sweep of UC Merced with a 21–7 victory Sunday.

The loss to FPU leaves CSUMB in a tie with Sunbirds for the No. 2 seed out of the West for the Western Water Polo Association Championship Tournament. With CSUMB's regular season schedule now complete, the Otters must wait for FPU to play Merced this Friday (Apr. 18), with a Sunbird win unofficially giving them the tie-breaker and the No. 2 seed.

The match at FPU featured a fantastic finish, with the Otters scoring five times in the fourth period to nearly pull out the comeback win. The five goals matched their most in the final period against an NCAA Division I or II opponent since a 14–13 win over Mercyhurst on Apr. 26, 2019.

Kaya Eaton (San Diego/Helix Charter HS), Alex Harris (Davis Senior HS) and Katie Rudis (Oceanside/El Camino HS) led the balanced offensive effort with two goals apiece. Allyson Ainsworth (West Sacramento/River City HS) added one goal, two assists and two drawn exclusions.

Freshman goalkeeper Marissa White (Union City/Mission San Jose HS) collected six saves and two steals to backstop the defense.

The Otters picked up Sunday where they left off Saturday with a 5-goal first period to claim early control in the rematch with UC Merced. CSUMB never let up, scoring 12 second-half goals to finish with 21, their most since a 22–9 win over Ottawa University in the season opener back on Jan. 17.

Eaton and Autumn Day (Murrieta Valley HS) led a trio of Otter hat trick scorers with four goals apiece. It was the eighth hatty of the season for Day and the first for Eaton. Freshman Emma Sosa (Tustin/Foothill HS) chipped in her eighth hat trick as well.

White stopped eight of 13 shots in three periods of work to earn her sixth victory of 2025. Kendra Weaver (Valley Center HS) mopped up the fourth period with a pair of saves.

The Otters will take to the training pool for the next two weeks before beginning postseason play. They'll head to Salem, West Virginia for the WWPA Championship Tournament Apr. 25–27.
