LOS ANGELES – The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team swept its doubleheader against Cal State LA to take a commanding 3-0 lead in the series against the CCAA leading Golden Eagles. The Otters claimed game one of the twin-bill, 9-8, and then won the second game, 5-4.
GAME ONE
CSUMB scored five runs in the final three innings to pull out the 9-8 win. A three-run eighth inning propelled the Otters back into the contest to even the score at eight on the strength of a
Max Farfan three-run homer and then
Cole Murchison hit the go-ahead homerun in the ninth.
The Otters out-hit the Golden Eagles, 14-12, as five recorded multi-hit games.
KW Quilici,
Javier Felix,
Sergio Solis,
Jacob Dressler and Murchison also banged out two hits apiece.
Giovanni Costello (3-0) was credited with the win after striking out six in 3 1/3 innings and
Andrew Kotin once again closed the door in the final frame for his fifth save of the season.
GAME TWO
The Otters once again used the latter innings to rally for the victory as they scored all five runs in the final three innings to take the series with the 5-4 win.
Noah Zertuche started the comeback for CSUMB as he smacked his sixth homerun of the season in solo fashion in the sixth inning.
Jacob Dressler then pulled the Otters within one with a single to center that plated
Javier Felix.
In the seventh and final inning,
Sergio Solis doubled home
Max Farfan and then
KW Quilici crushed his second double of the nightcap to bring home pinch-runner
Mike McKernan.
Dressler led the offensive attack at the plate for CSUMB with a 3-for-3 effort and Quilici went 2-for-4 with the two doubles. Farfan also added a pair of hits.
Kyle Giovannoni (2-2) earned the win after striking out three in 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.
Henry Proger recorded his first save in an Otter uniform after shutting the door in the seventh.
The two teams conclude the series tomorrow at Noon.
