Polo Opens Conference With Thrilling Win Over Fresno

Pichon's late goal gives Otters 7-6 win over Sunbirds

SEASIDE, Calif. -- Junior Ximena Pichon (Clovis HS) scored with 73 seconds remaining in regulation to lift Cal State Monterey Bay to a thrilling 7-6 win over Fresno Pacific in their WWPA opener Saturday in the Otter Tank.

The game became a rollercoaster affair from the moment Kaya Eaton (San Diego/Helix Charter HS) broke the ice with with a goal at the 5:02 mark of the first quarter. The teams traded goals into the middle of the second period when Allyson Ainsworth (West Sacramento/River City HS) and Kira Clark (Fremont/Mission San Jose HS) scored consecutive goals to give CSUMB its first multi-goal lead at 4-2.

FPU answered with a pair of third quarter scores to re-tie the game at 4-4 before Emma Sosa (Tustin/Foothills HS) and Autumn Day (Murrieta Valley HS) scored to give the Otters another 2-goal advantage, this time at 6-4.

The Sundbirds rallied one more time, sending the game in the direction of overtime when Regan Azevedo knotted the score at 6-6 with 1:46 remaining. But the ensuing Otter possession saw Pichon bury her sixth goal of the season to send Otter fans home happy.

"It was great to be back in the Otter Tank," said CSUMB Head Coach Emily Schmit. "Coming back home after a long road trip last weekend and clinching that one-point win against a conference opponent really shows the heart of this team."

Clark led the balanced Otter offense with a goal and three assists. She added a pair of field blocks on the defensive end to earn player of the game honors.

Day added a pair of assists to her 41st goal of the season. Ainsworth also finished with multiple points, including her 24th assist, tying Stella Martin (Clovis West HS) for the team lead.

The Otters return home next weekend to continue their 3-game homestand by hosting Biola University Saturday and UC Davis Sunday. First sprint both days is scheduled for 1 p.m.
