Polo Plays Barn-Burner With Biola

Teams play through 7 ties, 5 lead changes in 13-11 BU win

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay saw a barn-burner with defending WWPA champion Biola University slip away at the death when the Eagles survived with a 13–11 victory Saturday afternoon in the Otter Tank.

The teams played through an incredible seven ties and five lead changes before Gwendolyn Pidd scored for Biola early in the fourth quarter to break an 11–11 deadlock. The Otters had a pair of 6-on-5 opportunities to equalize, including one inside the final two minutes, but couldn't unlock the Eagle cage for the tying goal.

Biola took a 6–4 lead late in the first quarter, but Autumn Day (Murrieta Valley HS) responded immediately with an Otter goal. Over the final 24-plus minutes, neither team held more than a 1-goal advantage until the Eagles scored with 14 seconds left in regulation to seal their victory.

Day led the Otter offense with four goals and an assist. The five points give her 68 for the season and vault her into the Otter single-season Top 20 for the second time in 19th place. Her 77 points last season currently rank No. 12.

Emma Sosa (Tustin/Foothill HS) added three goals for her sixth hat trick of the season. Alex Harris (Davis Senior HS) scored a goal and set season highs with three assists and four points.

The Otters jump right back in the pool Sunday afternoon when they host No. 14 UC Davis for a 1 p.m. first sprint. It will be CSUMB's ninth match against a nationally-ranked opponent this season.
