SAN BERNARDINO – The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team splits its doubleheader against Cal State San Bernardino Saturday afternoon at Fiscalini Field. The Otters won the frontend, 4-3, and then suffered a tough extra-inning, 8-6, loss in the second game.
The Otters head into the final game with a 2-1 series lead and move to 18-10 overall and 11-8 in CCAA play.
GAME 1
CSUMB clinched no worse than a series split by taking down CSUSB in the first game of the doubleheader by the score of 4-3.
Senior
KW Quilici batted 2-for-5 that included his seventh home run of the season and scored twice, while
Jaden Sheppard hit 2-for-4 and drove in a run.
The Otters raced out to a 3-0 lead that started off by scoring a pair in the third and then single runs in the fifth and sixth and ultimately held on to take down the Yotes.
Henry Proger (2-1) earned the win by tossing 4 1/3 innings of five-hit relief. He allowed two runs and struck out three.
Mitchell Torres went 4 2/3 innings in his start, allowing one run on five hits while striking out three.
GAME 2
The two teams went back and forth in a highly contested game two, but it was ultimately the host Yotes that proved victorious in extra innings on the strength of a ninth inning walk-off three-run home run to win 8-6.
The Otters out-hit the Yotes, 11-10, as the first five CSUMB batters in the lineup accounted for 10 of those hits.
Noah Zertuche batted 3-for-5, while
Cole Murchison,
Jaden Sheppard, and
Jimmy Garcia all collected multi-hit games. Sheppard and
Max Farfan drove in a pair each.
Murchison proved clutch for the Otters as he smacked what at the time was a go-ahead solo home run to temporarily hand CSUMB a 6-5 lead in the ninth.
Aidan Lee allowed four runs on four hits and struck out six in his five-inning start.
Ryan Io allowed a single run on three hits in two innings of relief, while
Andrew Kotin was tagged with the loss in extra innings.
The two teams will close out the series tomorrow at 11 a.m.
