Otters Earn Second Split At No. 15 San Marcos

MB takes opener, 5-4, falls in nightcap, 6-5

SAN MARCOS, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay came within a strike of a mammoth sweep of No. 15 Cal State San Marcos before a late Cougar rally saved a split for the home side Saturday afternoon at the CSUSM Softball Field.

CSUMB took the opener, 5–4, before San Marcos rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh to take the nightcap, 6–5.

Freshman Kaitlyn Le (San Ramon/California HS) allowed just one unearned run in 3 1/3 innings of relief to earn her fourth win of the season. Fellow freshman Kadence Nulick (Madera/Buchanan HS) allowed just one hit in 1 12/3 innings to collect her first collegiate save.

A 2-run single from El Camino College transfer Malia Martin gave the Otters a 2–1 lead in the third inning before San Marcos rallied with three unanswered runs to go up 4–2 in the fourth. But Nani Arreola (Fillmore/Oaks Christian) laced a 2-run single down the left field line to tie the game in the sixth. Gracie Strycula (San Dimas HS) scored what proved to be the game winner with the very next batter when a throwing error on Ellie Escalante's (Soquel HS) sac bunt allowed her to score from second base.

After falling behind 2–0 in Game 2, the Otters jumped back in front with a 4-run fourth inning. Martin started the rally with an RBI knock and Ally Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS) capped it with a 2-run double.

Abreanna Alba (Watsonville HS/Cabrillo College) gave the Otters some insurance with a sac fly in the seventh, but the wheels fell of the Otter wagon after that. CSUMB made four errors in the home half of the seventh, leading to three unearned runs. An error on a grounder to short that should have sent the game to extra innings allowed the Cougars to walk it off.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Kadence Nulick coaxed Jillian Albayati to ground into a game-ending 4–3 double play.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… A fielding error on Czar Fleischman's grounder to short allowed the winning run to score with two outs in the seventh.

BEATING THE BEST… Saturday's 5–4 win over No. 15 Cal State San Marcos was CSUMB's 62nd win against a nationally–ranked opponent since the program began in 2006. CSUMB is 62–87 all–time against Top 25 opponents.

NULICK SAVES THE DAY: Kadence Nulick became the second Otter to save a game this season with 1 2/3 scoreless innings in Saturday's opener. One has to go back to the All-CCAA pitching duo of Cassie Gasper and Jensen Main in 2022 to find the last time two different Otters earned saves in the same season.

DOUBLE THE FUN, PART I… Ally Alcayaga hit her 45th career double in Game 2 Saturday, good for No. 7 on the Otter career doubles list. She needs three more to tie Madi Casto for sixth on the list.

DOUBLE THE FUN, PART II… Led by freshman Nevaeh Martinez, whose 11 doubles rank No. 2 in CCAA play this season, the Otters have hit 43 doubles as a team in 2025. At their current pace, they will finish the regular season with 72 doubles, a mark that would rank 10th in program history.

GAME 1 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: None. TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

GAME 2 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Ally Alcayaga (5). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return home to host five nonconference games next week. The action begins Tuesday when Northwest Nazarene visits to open a 3-game series with a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
