Otter, Nighthawks Split Doubleheader

Anastacia Alba homers in opener; Le earns fifth win

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay freshman Nevaeh Martinez's (Soquel HS) walk-off single led the Otters to a win in the opener as they split a doubleheader with Northwest Nazarene University Tuesday at the Otter Sports Complex.

Martinez's liner to right center plated Abreanna Alba (Watsonville HS/Cabrillo College) in the eighth inning to give CSUMB a 3–2 victory. NNU rebounded with a 5-run sixth to secure a 7–1 win in the nightcap.

Anastacia Alba (Watsonville HS) homered in the first inning of Game 1 to stake the Otters to a 1–0 before the Nighthawks scored a pair in the fourth to go up, 2–1. The Otters tied it in the sixth when Abreanna Alba singled and moved to third after the throw back to the infield found its way into the NNU dugout.

Martinez followed with a perfectly executed squeeze play that ultimately forced extra innings. That combination ended the affair two innings later when Alba reached with a 2-out single, moved to second on a wild pitch, then came home on Martinez's big hit.

Those heroics wouldn't have been possible without the clutch relief work of freshman Kaitlyn Le (San Ramon/California HS). Le entered the game with a runner on third and no outs in the sixth inning, escaped the jam, and finished with three innings of 1-hit, shutout ball to improve to 5–3.

Freshman Mikaya Griego (Diamond Bar HS) followed with her best start as an Otter in Game 2. She kept the Otters in the game by allowing just two runs through five innings before a key error opened the floodgates to NNU's big sixth inning.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Nevaeh Martinez lined a single to right center with two outs in the eighth inning to plate Abreanna Alba with the walk-off run.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… A fielding error opened the gates on a 5-run NNU sixth inning, giving the Nighthawks a 7–0 lead.

SHE'S WALKING… Oli Perez drew her 50th career walk in Tuesday's opener to tie Jayme Stark for 13th on the Otter career walks list.

ANOTHER DOUBLE FOR ALLY: Ally Alcayaga hit her 46th career double in Tuesday's opener, moving her to within two of Madi Casto for No. 6 on the Otter career doubles list.

GRALNICK IS PERFECT… Sophomore Karissa Gralnick tossed the first perfect inning of her young career, striking out a pair of Nighthawks in a 1–2–3 seventh inning during Game 2

GAME 1 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Ally Alcayaga (6). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: Anastacia Alba (3).

GAME 2 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Anastacia Alba (6). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 3-game series with Northwest Nazarene when they play a single game Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
