Otters Explode for 11 Unanswered Runs in Series Opening Victory

CSUMB takes down Chico State 11-4

SEASIDE, Calif. - After falling into an early 4-0 hole after three innings, Cal State Monterey Bay scored 11 unanswered runs to race past Chico State in the series opener, 11-4, Friday evening at the Otter Sports Complex.

The Otters banged out 14 hits as Noah Zertuche, Javier Felix and Nick Maestas all had three-hit games. Maestas added three RBI and Max Farfan drove in a pair. One swing of the bat from Jaden Sheppard tallied four runs.

CSUMB scored three runs in the fourth inning as Dominic Felice doubled in Cole Murchison. Farfan singled home Jacob Dressler and then Maestas hit a sac-fly that brought home Felice.

The Otters evened the score the next inning as Murchison plated Sheppard on a groundout. Sheppard was a big reason CSUMB broke the game open the next inning, smashing a grand slam over the wall in right. Farfan started off the big inning tripling home Felice and then promptly scored on a Maestas single.

The Otters capped off their scoring when Maestas drove home Felix on an infield single.

Henry Proger was masterful in his 3 1/3 innings of relief to earn his first win in a CSUMB uniform. The lefthander struck out seven and allowed three hits.

Nate Rohlicek allowed the four runs on eight hits and struck out four in his five-inning start.

The two teams will meet tomorrow for a doubleheader. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 2 p.m.
