Polo Closes Convergence Against No. 10 UC Irvine

Otters drop two decisions vs. Division I foes to close tourney play

LAREMONT, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay closed play at the Claremont Convergence tournament against their toughest foe in nearly a decade when it met No. 10 UC Irvine Saturday evening. The Anteaters looked every bit the nation title contender in a 20–2 victory over the Otters in Pomona's Haldeman Pool.

Irvine was the highest ranked team faced by the Otters since meeting top-ranked Stanford in 2016.

The Anteaters took control of the game early, racing to a 5–0 lead by the end of the first period. Junior Natalie Mancinelli (El Dorado Hills/Santa Barbara CC) got CSUMB on the board with a goal in the second period. Freshman Emma Sosa (Tustin/Foothill HS) scored CSUMB's second marker in the fourth.

CSUMB began play Saturday with another Division I opponent in a 16–7 loss to Long island University. The Otters went up early when Shea Tully (Yucaipa HS) broke the ice with her fifth goal of the season less than two minutes after the opening sprint.

The game was still close until the final minute of the half when the Sharks scored twice in the last 40 seconds to spur a 5–0 run that gave them control. Kaya Eaton (San Diego/Helix Charter HS) completed her first hat trick of the season with a pair of second-half goals, but they weren't enough to help close the gap.

In addition to Tully and Eaton, Autumn Day (Murrieta Valley HS) scored twice and added a pair of assists against the Sharks. Senior Abby Delport (Reedley HS/Fresno CC) scored the other CSUMB goal.

Freshman Marissa White (Union City/Mission San Jose HS) played another strong game in goal against LIU, making 16 stops. That marked missed her season high — set less than 24 hours earlier against Cal State Northridge — by a single save.

CSUMB returns to the friendly confines of the Otter Tank to face its first WWPA foe of the season next Saturday (Mar. 8) when Fresno Pacific University visits for a 1 p.m. first sprint.
