Otters Power Their Way to Doubleheader Sweep

Felix and Sheppard have back-to-back multi-home run games

SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team used the longball early and often to earn the doubleheader sweep and more importantly the series victory over Sonoma State on Saturday. The Otters claimed game one, 8-2, and then won the nightcap, 4-2, to improve to 9-5 overall and 4-3 in CCAA play.

GAME ONE

Two swings from Javier Felix are all the Otters would need to muscle their way to an 8-2 victory in the frontend of the doubleheader.

Felix smashed two grand slams to account for all eight runs to lead CSUMB to victory. The eight RBI are tied for the fifth most in a single game in CCAA history.

The senior transfer recorded his first slam of the game in the opening inning, clearing the wall in right-center.

In the sixth inning, he went opposite field again for the grand slam, finding the trees beyond the rightfield fence. Felix batted 2-for-4 in the opener.

Jimmy Garcia batted 2-for-2, scored twice and drew three walks, while KW Quilici and Jaden Sheppard each scored twice.

Dylan Gardner earned his first win in an Otter uniform, allowing two runs on three hits, while fanning four in five innings. Nate Rohlicek was credited with the save, striking out five in four innings of scoreless relief.

GAME TWO

Javier Felix put on the power display in game one and game two proved to be the Jaden Sheppard show as he belted two home runs to finish the night 2-for-3.

Both his homers were no-doubters as he opened the game in the first with his third homer of the season and then tacked on his fourth in the third.

Dominic Felice tripled home a run and Max Farfan was also credited with an RBI in the winning effort.

In his first start of the season, Aidan Lee struck out eight in four innings to improve to 3-1 on the season. The right-hander allowed one run on four hits. Andrew Kotin earned the save after allowing one hit and striking out one in the seventh.

The two teams will close out the series tomorrow with a Sunday matinee. First pitch is scheduled for Noon.
