Chico Hangs On late For 69–59 Win

Joey Bilello scores 15, Jaden Tengan passes 600 career points

CHICO, Calif. — Chico State found a way to hang on late against a determined Cal State Monterey Bay squad, pulling away in the final minute to earn a 69–59 win Saturday afternoon in Acker Gym.

The second half featured five ties and three lead changes in a game that wasn't decided until Chico made four free throws in the final 32 seconds.

Sophomore Joey Bilello (Littleton, Colo./ThunderRidge HS) led a balanced Otter offense with 15 points. Fellow sophomore Jaden Tengan (Santa Clarita Christian) added 13 points while Javon Johnson (De La Salle HS) and Ariya Briscoe (Portland, Ore./West Valley College) hit season highs with three blocks and three steals respectively.

The Otters trailed by just three at the break, 35–32, and needed only three minutes of second-half action to knot the score at 41–41. The teams traded the lead over the next eight minutes until a Jojo Murphy 3-pointer broke a 53–53 tie. CSUMB kept the deficit under six points until the final minute, when Chico cemented its win from the free-throw line.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… As is tradition, we use the Bill James Safe Lead Formula in this space to determine when the game was over statistically. Saturday's game statistically ended when Trey Taylor grabbed the rebound of an Otter miss with 20 seconds to play and Chico leading 67–59.

OTTERS ON THE BLOCKS: With five more blocks Saturday in Chico, the Otters moved to No. 3 on their single-season blocks list with 87. They need 15 more to tie the 2015–16 Otter for the No. 2 spot. At their current pace, the Otters would finish with 112 blocks, breaking school record of 109 set in 2006.

TENGAN PASSES 600 POINT LEVEL: With 13 points Saturday at Chico, Jaden Tengan passed the 600-point level with 601 career points. He becomes the 23rd player in Otter history to pass 600 career points. He needs 56 more points to pass Mateo Jones for a spot in the Top 20.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Joey Bilello 15; REBOUNDS: Blake Jones 9; ASSISTS: Chol Deng 4; BLOCKS: Javon Johnson 3; STEALS: Ariya Briscoe 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return to the friendly confines of The Kelp Bed for a pair of games next weekend, starting Thursday (Feb. 13) when Cal State L.A. makes its annual visit. Tip-off will be at 7:30 p.m. as the nightcap of doubleheader action with the Otter women.
