Tengan Goes Big, But Otters Drop Close One

Jaden Tengan scores 27 but L.A. win 82-77

SEASIDE, Calif. — Sophomore Jaden Tengan (Santa Clarita Christian) poured in 27 points, but it wasn't enough to prevent another close setback as Cal State L.A. escaped The Kelp Bed with an 82–77 win Thursday night.

Tengan scored 17 points in the second half as the Otters chipped away at a 12-point deficit over the final five minutes, pulling to within three before L.A. iced the game from the free-throw line.

The Golden Eagle shooters were on fire early, making 10-of-18 from long range while building a 46–30 lead at intermission. The Otters came out of the break with a 10–0 run that got them back to within six, but L.A. weathered that storm and built its lead back to double digits before the furious Otter rally fell just short.

In addition to Tengan, Blake Jones (Canberra, Aust.) chipped in his fourth double-double of the season with 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Michael Mora (Palo Alto/Univ. of Vermont) added 11 points while Jackson Corley (Napa/Vintage HS) passed a career-high six assists.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… As is tradition, we use the Bill James Safe Lead Formula in this space to determine when the game was over statistically. Thursday's game wasn't over until Jaden Tengan's last 3-point attempt didn't fall with three seconds remaining.

TENGAN MATCHES CONFERENCE CAREER HIGH: While his 27 points Thursday versus Cal State L.A. weren't his career high — that distinction belongs to the 32 he scored in a Nov. 27 win at Dominican University — Jaden Tengan did match the most point he's ever scored in a CCAA game. He also scored 27 in last season's finale at Stanislaus State (Feb. 29, 2024).

JONES ON THE BLOCKS: With two blocks Thursday versus Cal State L.A., Blake Jones tied Kris Gallop (2013) for No. 8 on the Otter single-season blocks list with 26. He needs three more to catch Roman Dolvan (2002) and Julian Ducree (2017) for No. 6.

OTTERS ON THE BLOCKS: With a five blocks Thursday versus Cal State L.A., the Otters continued to inch closer to the school record for blocks in a season. They now sit in third place with 92. At their current pace, the Otters would finish with 112 blocks and break the school record of 109 set during the 2005–06 season.

AUSSIES HAVE DOUBLE THE FUN: Australian Blake Jones has accounted for all four of CSUMB's double-doubles so far this season. But then, Aussies have a long history of having double the fun in Otter uniforms. Since 2019, Australians Andrew Ferguson (11), Charles Johnston (14) and Jones (4) have accounted for 29 of CSUMB's 37 double-doubles.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jaden Tengan 27; REBOUNDS: Blake Jones 12; ASSISTS: Jackson Corley 6; BLOCKS: Blake Jones/Michael Mora 2; STEALS: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their brief 2-game homestand by hosting CCAA leaders Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday (Feb. 15). Tip-off will be at 3 p.m. as the nightcap of doubleheader action with the Otter women.
