No. 17 Toros Show Their Mettle In 82–65 Win

Michael Mora scores 15 for CSUMB, Chol Deng passes seven assists

SEASIDE, Calif. — No. 17 Cal State Dominguez Hills proved it was worth every bit of its ranking and more when it handed Cal State Monterey Bay an 82–65 defeat Saturday evening in The Kelp Bed.

CSUMB showed flashes of individual excellence, with freshman Michael Mora (Palo Alto/Univ. of Vermont) scoring 15 points, senior Blake Jones (Canberra, Aust.) scoring 12 with seven boards and a pair of blocks and junior Chol Deng (Sydney, NSW/ Greyson CC) grabbing seven rebounds and passing a season-high seven assists.

But a balanced Toro offense raced to an 11-point lead before the game was four minutes old. The CSUDH advantage grew to as many as 21 in the first half before a late Otter run trimmed it to 43–30 at the break.

The lead never grew that large again and, as always happens with this edition of the Otters, they made a change, cutting the deficit to seven points multiple times in the second period. Every time CSUMB had a chance to get within two possessions, however, the Toros held their ground and let them get no closer.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… As is tradition, we use the Bill James Safe Lead Formula in this space to determine when the game was over statistically. That moment in Saturday's game came when DJ Guest knocked down a three with 3:30 remaining to give the Toros a 76–59 lead.

BLAKE ON THE BLOCKS: With two blocks Saturday versus Cal State Dominguez Hills, Blake Jones claimed sole possession of eighth place on the Otter single-season blocks list. With his next rejection, he'll tie Roman Dolvan (2002) and Julien Ducree (2017) for sixth.

OTTERS ON THE BLOCKS: With a six more blocks Saturday against Cal State Dominguez Hills, the Otters moved two within two of becoming the third Otter team ever to block 100 shots in a season. They need five more to pass the 2016 Otter for No. 2 on the list and 12 more to beat the school record of 109 set during the 2005–06 season.

'TIS BETTER TO GIVE: The Otters passing game has been far from a 1-man show this season. Saturday against Cal State Dominguez Hills, Chol Deng passed a season-high seven assists, becoming the fourth Otter to pass for seven or more assists in a game this season. He joined Ariya Briscoe, Blake Jones and Jaden Tengan in that club.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Michael Mora 15; REBOUNDS: Chol Deng/Blake Jones 7; ASSISTS: Chol Deng 7; BLOCKS: Konner Baroni/Blake Jones 2; STEALS: Konner Baroni/Javon Johnson/Blake Jones/Jaden Tengan 1.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters hit the road for their final trip of the season, beginning with a rematch at Sonoma State Thursday (Feb. 20). Tip-off will be at 7:30 p.m. as the nightcap of doubleheader action with the Otter women.
