Strong Start Not Enough In Sonoma Swan Song

Mora scores 21, Jones adds double-double in 87-80 setback

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — A strong start by the Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team had an unhappy ending as Sonoma State rallied from a 9-point halftime deficit to earn an 87–80 win in CSUMB's final visit to the Wolves Den Thursday night.

CSUMB got a season-high 21 points from freshman Michael Mora (Palo Alto/Univ. of Vermont) and a 12-point, 11-rebound double-double from senior Blake Jones (Canberra, Aust.). Jaden Tengan (12 points) and Jackson Corley (11) also scored in double figures for the Otters.

The Otters compiled a huge advantage on the glass (44 to 33), but that wasn't enough to overcome the Seawolves making twice as many free throws (18-of-25) as CSUMB attempted (6-of-9). Despite that, CSUMB led for the first 33 minutes of the game until the Seawolves forged their first tie at 66–66 with seven minutes remaining. Sonoma didn't take its first lead until Donovan Sevilla made a driving layup for a 71–70 lead two minutes later.

The teams traded leads until three Otter misses from the line allowed the Seawolves to go up 79–77 inside of two minutes to play. Sonoma made eight free throws in the final 70 seconds to close out the game.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… As is tradition, we use the Bill James Safe Lead Formula in this space to determine when the game was over statistically. Thursday at Sonoma State, that moment came with 17 seconds remaining when a pair of Donovan Sevilla free throws to put Sonoma ahead 85–77.

A SEASON-HIGH FOR MORA… Michael Mora's game-high 21 points Thursday night at Sonoma State were the freshman's collegiate high as well as his second 20-point game as an Otter. He also scored 20 in the Otter win at Cal Poly Pomona on Jan. 16.

AUSSIES HAVE DOUBLE THE FUN… Australian Blake Jones has accounted for all five of CSUMB's double-doubles so far this season following Thursday's 12-point, 11-rebound performance. But then, Aussies have a long history of having double the fun in Otter uniforms. Since 2019, Australians Andrew Ferguson (11), Charles Johnston (14) and Jones (5) have accounted for 30 of CSUMB's 38 double-doubles.

THE OTTER SHOT BLOCKERS JOIN THE CENTURY CLUB…  The Otters blocked three shots Thursday at Sonoma State, giving them 101 for the season. This is the third Otter squad to reach 100 blocks, joining the 2016 team (102) and the 2006 team (109). At their current pace, they will break the program record with 115 blocks.

BLAKE ON THE BLOCKS… With one block Thursday at Sonoma State, Blake Jones tied Roman Dolvan (2002) and Julien Ducree (2017) for sixth on the Otter single-season blocks list with 29 blocks. He needs one more to tie Greg Polosky (2018) for fifth place.

IF ONLY A HALF WAS AS GOOD AS A WHOLE… The Otters led Sonoma State 41–32 at the half Thursday night, marking the 12th time in 23 games the Otters have led at the break. They are 5–7 when leading after 20 minutes.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT…POINTS: Michael Mora 21; REBOUNDS: Blake Jones 11; ASSISTS: Ariya Briscoe/Blake Jones 4; BLOCKS: Konner Baroni/Blake Jones/Michael Mora 1; STEALS: Michael Mora 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters play their final road game of the season when they head south the take on Cal State San Marcos Saturday (Feb. 22). Tip-off is at 3 p.m. as the nightcap of doubleheader action with the Otter women.
