San Marcos Pulls Away Late, 72–67

Jaden Tengan lead Otters with 16 points

SAN MARCOS, Calif. — Host Cal State San Marcos gained just enough separation down the stretch to hold on for a 72–67 win over visiting Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday evening in the CSUSM Sports Center.

Sophomore Jaden Tengan (Santa Clarita Christian) led nine Otter scorers with 16 points. Fellow sophomore Joey Bilello (Littleton, Colo./ThunderRidge HS) and senior Blake Jones (Canberra, Aust.) also reach double figures with 10 points apiece.

The Otters held their last lead at 54–53 with under 10 minutes to play when San Marcos went on a 12–0 run to open its biggest lead at 65–54. As they always do, the Otters chipped away at the deficit, pulling to within three at 70–67 on a Tengan layup. But Keavie Love sank a pair of free throws on the ensuing Cougar possession and that's the way the game ended.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… As is tradition, we use the Bill James Safe Lead Formula in this space to determine when the game was over statistically. That moment in Saturday's game came when the Cougars grabbed the rebound of Chol Deng's 3-point attempt with two seconds left in regulation.

BLAKE ON THE BLOCKS: With two blocks Saturday at Cal State San Marcos, Blake Jones passed Greg Polosky (2018) for No. 5 on the Otter single-season blocked shots list with 31. He needs six more over the final two games to catch Jay Demaestri (2006) for the No. 3 spot.

OTTERS ON THE BLOCKS: The Otters blocked three shots Saturday at Cal State San Marcos, giving them 104 for the season, good for No. 2 in the Otter record book. They need six blocks over the final two games to break the record of 109 set by the 2006 team.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jaden Tengan 16; REBOUNDS: Jackson Corley 6; ASSISTS: Joey Bilello/Jackson Corley 2; BLOCKS: Blake Jones 2; STEALS: Chol Deng/Blake Jones 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return to The Kelp Bed for the final two games of the 2024-25 season The action begins Thursday (Feb. 27) when Cal State San Bernardino pays its annual visit. Tip-off will be at 7:30 p.m. as the nightcap of doubleheader action with the Otter women.
