Otters Break Blocks Record But Fall To Coyotes

Otters swat eight to smash 19-year school record, but CSUSB wins 87-66

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team made program history Thursday night, barrelling past the school record for blocks in a season. Unfortunately for Otter fans, visiting Cal State San Bernardino spoiled the celebration by posting an 87–66 victory in The Kelp Bed.

The Otters blocked eight shots Thursday night — by themselves the fourth most in a single game in CSUMB history — bringing their season total to 112 in 26 games. That shatters the previous best of 109 blocks set over the 30 games of the 2005–06 campaign.

As for the rest of the game, the tale was told from beyond the 3-point arc, from where the Coyotes shot a sizzling 14-for-23 (61 percent). The Otters, meanwhile, went 3-for-15 (20 percent) from long range.

CSUMB led for the game's first 10 minutes and was ahead 22–18 when things began to unravel. That's when a Cameron Pierce layup started a 15–2 San Bernardino run that flipped the game's script. Another Pierce layup made it 43–32 late in the half and the Otters never climbed within 10 of the lead again.

A big, bright statistical highlight for the Otters came from senior Konner Baroni (Auburn/UCSB/Yuba College), who stepped off the bench to score a career-high 17 points in 17 minutes. Freshman Michael Mora (Palo Alto/Univ. of Vermont) added 15 points and four blocks, seventh most in school history and the most by an Otter since Charles Johnston swatted four in a win over Stanislaus State in 2023.

The Otters return to action Saturday when they host Cal Poly Pomona in their season finale. It will mark the final collegiate games for seniors Baroni, Blake Jones and Alec Zambie.
