AZUSA – The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team split its doubleheader against Azusa Pacific on Saturday. Both games went into extra innings as the Otters rallied late in the series finale to post the 9-8 win.
CSUMB moves to 5-2 on the young season and has won both series to open the 2025 campaign.
The Otters dropped the frontend of the doubleheader, 7-6, and then scored four runs in the sixth and the game-winner in the eighth to win the nightcap.
GAME 1
The Cougars scored three runs in the eighth and then walked the game off in the 10
th on a sac-fly to right.
KW Quilici and
Jaden Sheppard both batted 4-for-6 as Sheppard scored twice.
Javier Felix went 3-for-6 with a home run and
Jimmy Garcia smacked a solo shot.
GAME 2
The Otters scored four runs in the sixth and tacked on the eventual game-winning run in the eighth inning to down the Cougars, 9-8.
Max Farfan gave CSUMB the series victory by hitting a double to right-center that plated
Dominic Felice. Felice batted 2-for-3 with three runs scored and drove in two.
Casey Hinojosa hit his first home run of the season and tallied two hits, while
Andrew Lehmann batted 2-for-5.
Down 8-4, the Otters used a four-run sixth to eventually force extra innings.
Omar Gastelum supplied the big hit in the frame, tying the game with a double that scored
Jaden Sheppard.
CSUMB will now have the weekend off before opening CCAA play on the road at Cal Poly Pomona. The four-game series will begin on Friday, Feb. 21, at Scolinos Field.
