Otters Split Day 1 Of Claremont Convergence

Otters beat Occidental, fall to Division I foe Northridge

LOS ANGELES — Cal State Monterey Bay water polo earned a split on Day 1 of the Claremont Convergence Tournament Friday, falling to Division I foe Cal State Northridge, 14–8, before beating Occidental College,13–7. Both games took place at Occidental's Del Mandel Aquatics Center.

The Otters continue to play nationally-ranked Northridge tough, but haven't been able to get over the hump against the Matadors. Friday, CSUN pulled away with five unanswered goals in the second half to prevent an Otter comeback.

Sophomore Stella Martin (Clovis West HS) led the charge against Northridge, registering two goals and two assists to pace the offense. Freshman goalkeeper Marissa White (Union City/Mission San Jose HS) continued her impressive run of play with 17 saves.

Fortunes turned in CSUMB's favor in the evening match as they opened the Occidental game with runs of 3–0 and 6–2 to take early control. The Tigers did crawl back to within 9–7 midway through the third period, but a pair of Ximena Pichon (Clovis HS) goals highlighted a 4–0 closing run that put the game out of reach.

Martin finished with two goals and two assists in both games as her 8-point day highlighted CSUMB's offensive efforts. Autumn Day (Murrieta Valley HS) added her seventh hat trick of the season with three goals in the win over Occidental.

The Otters will conclude play at the Claremont Convergence tournament Saturday when they face two more NCAA Division I opponents. They'll meet Long Island University at 10:15 a.m. in La Verne before tackling No. 10 UC Irvine at 4:30 p.m. in Claremont.
