Otters Race Past Seawolves in Series Opener, 8-3

CSUMB trio tally multi-RBI games in winning effort

SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team scored seven unanswered runs to take game one of its series against Sonoma State, 8-3, Friday evening at the Otter Sports Complex. After the victory, the Otters improve to 7-5 overall and 2-3 in CCAA play.

Jacob Dressler batted 2-for-3 and scored three runs, while Javier Felix also tallied a multi-hit game, batting 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Felix was one of three Otters to drive in a pair of runs and was joined by Jaden Sheppard and Cole Murchison. Sheppard scored twice and drew two walks, while Murchison batted 1-for-3.

Giovanni Costello improved to 2-0 on the season after tossing 5 1/3 innings of one-hit relief, while striking out seven.

After the Seawolves seized a 3-1 lead in top of the third, the Otters scored seven unanswered runs to take a 6-3 lead after five. CSUMB tacked on two more in the seventh to cap off the victory.

Murchison had the big hit in the third inning, driving in two with a single through the right side that plated KW Quilici and Felix. Quilici tacked on the third run in the frame with a single up the middle.

In the fifth inning, Felix drove in a pair on the strength of a double in the right-center gap that scored Quilici and Sheppard.

Sheppard then came back and added two insurance runs with one swing of the bat, clearing the wall in center to hand the Otters the final 8-3 advantage.

The two teams will return for a doubleheader tomorrow. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 2 p.m.
