Strong Second Half Helps No. 18 SJSU Pull Away From Otters

Emma Sosa records hat trick for CSUMB in 22-9 loss

SEASIDE, Calif. — The script was flipped from the first meeting, but the results turned out the same as No. 18 San Jose State used a strong second half to pull away from Cal State Monterey Bay for a 22–8 win Saturday afternoon in the Otter Tank.

When the teams met in San Jose earlier this month, the Spartans used a fast start to take a 22–9 decision. This time, the Otters went toe-to-toe with their Division I neighbors before the Spartans caught fire on both ends of the pool after halftime.

San Jose did start strong again Saturday, but the Otters used four power play goals to pull to within 10–7 at intermission. The Spartans regrouped, however, and out-scored the Otters 12–1 in the second half to secure the win.

Freshman Emma Sosa (Tustin/Foothill HS) recorded her third hat trick in four games, leading CSUMB with three goals. Junior Autumn Day (Murrieta Valley HS) brought her weekend total to 10 goals with a brace Saturday.

Abby Delport (Reedley HS), Ximena Pichon (Clovis HS) and Shea Tully (Yucaipa HS) were CSUMB's top helpers with two assists apiece. Marissa White (Union City/Mission San Jose HS) went the distance in goal and made nine saves.

The Otters head south next weekend for the annual Claremont Convergence Tournament Feb. 28 and Mar. 1. CSUMB will begin tournament play Friday against Cal State Northridge at Occidental College

The Otters return home to host WWPA rival Fresno Pacific Mar. 8.
