Offense Explosion Leads To Otter Sweep

CSUMB beats La Verne 21-11, Chapman 17-10

FRESNO, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay exploded for 38 goals to sweep a pair of matches Saturday at the Sunbird Mini Tournament. The Otters beat the University of La Verne 21–11 in their early match before rallying to beat Chapman University 17–10 at the Sunnyside Aquatics Center.

The 21 goals scored in the opener tied for the third most in program history. For good measure, the 38 total goals were the second most scored over two games in program history.

Against the Leopards, the Otters scored the first five goals of the match and never looked back. Allyson Ainsworth (West Sacramento/River City HS) and Autumn Day (Murietta Valley HS) led the onslaught with five goals apiece. Natalie Mancinelli (Oak Ridge HS/Santa Barbara CC), Stella Martin (Clovis West HS) and Kaya Eaton (San Diego/Helix Charter HS) added two goals apiece.

Marissa White (Union City/Mission San Jose HS) and Kendra Weaver (Valley Center HS) split time in the cage, with White claiming seven of CSUMB's 10 saves.

The Otters found the current a little tougher against Chapman. The Panthers raced to an 8–5 halftime lead. But Mancinelli's power play goal on CSUMB's first possession after the break sparked an 8–1 Otter surge that gave them a 13–9 lead with less than six minutes remaining in regulation.

By the time Abby Allan (Sanger HS) scored in the final minute, the run had grown to 12–1 and the game was all but over.

Martin and Day both recorded hat tricks for the Otter against Chapman. Harris and Eaton each scored a pair of goals while Martin passed three assists.

White went the distance between the pipes and made 13 saves.

THE LA VERNE MATCH WAS OVER WHENAllyson Ainsworth completed a natural hat trick (three consecutive goals) to cap a 5–0 opening run for the Otters. The Leopards never got closer than four goals the rest of the way.

THE CHAPMAN MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… With the Otters trailing 9–8 in the third quarter, Marissa White made a pair of saves to spark what became a 12–1 finishing kick for CSUMB.

FIVE TWENTYSOMETHINGS… With their 21–11 win over La Verne, the Otters surpassed the 20-goal plateau for the fifth time in program history. The last time they did it was in a 21–1 win over UC Merced in March of 2024. The Otter record for goals in a match was set in a 28–2 win over Cal Tech on Mar. 2, 2019.

BACK TO BACK EXPLOSIONS… The 38 total goals scored by the Otters Saturday were the second most scored in consecutive games in program history. The only time they scored more was in wins over Whittier College (15 goals) and Cal Tech (28) back in 2019.

HIGH FIVES… Autumn Day and Allyson Ainsworth both scored five times in the win over La Verne, marking the second time in program history that has happened. The last time came in the previously mentioned 28-goal outburst against Cal Tech in 2019, when Marisa Lovos and Kaya Ortega did the honors.

HANG A HAT ON THAT…  Four different Otters recorded five hat tricks Saturday afternoon in Fresno. Autumn Day notched hatties in both games, with five goals against La Verne and three against Chapman. She now has six for the season and nine in her career. The other hat tricks went to Allyson Ainsworth, with five goals against La Verne, and Abby Allan and Emma Sosa, who each had three against Chapman.

GOAL SCORERS vs. UNIV. OF LA VERNE… Allyson Ainsworth 5, Autumn Day 5, Kaya Eaton 2, Natalie Mancinelli 2, Stella Martin 2, Annika Harper, Alex Harris, Jerzie Jarigue-Mora, Ximena Pichon, Katie Rudis.

GOAL SCORERS vs. CHAPMAN UNIVERSITY… Abby Allan 3, Autumn Day 3, Emma Sosa 3, Kaya Eaton 2, Alex Harris 2, Allyson Ainsworth, Natalie Mancinelli, Ximena Pichon, Shea Tully

THE LAST WORD… "These two wins today are a great demonstration of the grit of this team. Against La Verne we came out strong and never let up. Against Chapman, we had to refocus at halftime and then were able to play our game." — CSUMB Head Coach Emily Schmit

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… CSUMB returns to the Otter Tank to face their seventh nationally-ranked NCAA Division I opponent in their first 14 matches when they host No. 18 San Jose State Sunday (Feb. 23). First sprint is scheduled for 1 p.m.
