Two More Strong Efforts Against Nationally-Ranked Foes

Otters fall to #23 Marist and #20 Pacific

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The ascension of play continued for Cal State Monterey Bay water polo as the Otters put up strong fights in a pair of losses to nationally-rank NCAA Division I competition Sunday at the Santa Clara Invitational. CSUMB fell to No. 23 Marist College, 19–8, before battling No. 20 University of the Pacific in a 14–10 decision at Santa Clara University's Sullivan Aquatics Center.

Marist and Pacific were the fifth and sixth nationally-ranked opponents the Otters have faced in their first 11 matches. Although the rewards haven't appeared in the win column — yet — the growing competitiveness promises to pay dividends when the Otters start the Division II portion of their schedule next month.

Sunday, the Otters trailed Marist just 9–5 at the half before the Red Foxes broke the game open with a 5–1 edge in the third period. Junior Autumn Day Murrieta Valley HS) led the offense with her fourth hat trick of the season. Sophomore Stella Martin (Clovis West HS) added two goals while senior Allyson Ainsworth (River City HS) chipped in a goal and three assists.

Sunday's late game against Pacific was even more competitive. Freshman Emma Sosa (Tustin/Foothill HS) scored to end the third period and again early in the fourth to pull the Otters to within 11–8 with five minutes remaining before the Tigers held on for the win.

Day, Sosa and junior Natalie Mancinelli (El Dorado Hills/Santa Barbara CC) each scored a pair of goals for CSUMB. Ainsworth once again contributed a goal and three assists. Freshman goalie Marissa White (Union City/Mission San Jose HS) made 14 stops.

CSUMB will take a one week break from NCAA Division I competition when it heads to the Central Valley Feb. 22 to play the University of La Verne and Chapman University at Fresno's Sunnyside Aquatics Center. The Otters return home to face nationally-ranked San Jose State next Sunday (Feb. 23) in the Otter Tank.
