SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay opened the season with a signature win Saturday, downing No. 15 Central Washington 92–88 to close the Otter Classic Saturday night in The Kelp Bed.

Sticking to the script that served it so well in its season-opening win over Western Oregon, CSUMB forged a narrow lead late in the first half, then led wire-to-wire in the second half to improve to 2–0 on the young season.

Sophomore swingman Michael Mora (Palo Alto/Univ. of Vermont) earned tournament MVP honors with a career-high 29 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Mora scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds in the second half to help the Otters hold off a furious Wildcat comeback in the closing minutes.

The Otters extended their lead to as many as 15 points in the second half, and still led by 12 at 83–71 with 4:39 to play. A 10–0 Wildcat run made Otter fans sweat, watching the CSUMB lead shrink to 83–81 inside the final two minutes.

A Chol Deng (Sydney, NSW, Australia) dunk restored CSUMB's 2-possession advantage on the subsequent inbounds play and a Mora steal and coast-to-coast dunk expanded the lead back to six at 87–81. Two Ashton Reese (Scottsdale, Ariz./UMBC) free throws and another Mora dunk got the lead back to 10 and removed all doubt for the outcome.

In addition to Mora, Joey Bilello (Littleton, Colo./ThunderRidge HS) scored 18 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Reese chipped in a career-high 15 points with six boards. Jaden Tengan (Sacramento/Santa Clarita Christian HS) scored 12 points and passed a game-high eight assists.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Using the Bill James safe lead formula, the game was statistically over Jaden Tengan a free throw with seven seconds remaining to extend the Otter lead to 92–86.

ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM: CSUMB: Michael Mora (MVP), Joey Bilello; CWU: Bradley Siwillie, Jordan Clark, CWU; WOU: Jaden Penigar; MENLO: Devon Woods.

GIANT KILLERS: CSUMB's 92–88 win over No. 15 Central Washington was its first win over a nationally-ranked team since (checks notes) a 72–58 win over No. 15 Central Washington in Ellensburg on Nov. 10, 2024. It was CSUMB's third win over a nationally-ranked program in the past five seasons.

POURING IT ON: By scoring 86 in the win over Western Oregon and 92 in the win over No. 15 Central Washington, the Otters scored their most points in consecutive games (178) since going for 193 in win over Concordia-Portland (97) and the Univ. of Alaska (96) Nov. 9–15, 2019.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Michael Mora 29; REBOUNDS: Joey Bilello/Michael Mora 8; ASSISTS: Jaden Tengan 8; BLOCKS: Joey Bilello/Ariya Briscoe 1 1; STEALS: Joey Bilello 3.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… CSUMB hits the road for its next five games, beginning with a game against host Jessup University at the Bill Holtz Classic Nov. 21 in Rocklin. CSUMB doesn't return to The Kelp Bed until its CCAA home opener against Cal State San Marcos on Dec. 6.
