Tengan’s 23 Leads Otter Past Jessup, 77–69

Otters improve to 3-0with first road victory

ROCKLIN, Calif. — Junior Jaden Tengan (Sacramento/Santa Clarita Christian) scored a season-high 23 points to lead Cal State Monterey Bay past Jessup University, 77–69, Friday night in Warrior Arena.
The win lifted CSUMB to 3–0 on the season while Jessup fell to 1–2.

The teams played through 10 ties and seven lead changes until Joey Bilello (Littleton, Colo./ThunderRidge HS) buried a 3-pointer to put the Otters ahead to stay at 64–61 with 4:15 remaining. A pair of Tengan layups on consecutive possessions increased the Otter lead to six with 1:33 to play and the Warriors never again owned the ball within a possession of the lead.

Tengan and Jackson Corley (Napa/Vintage HS) combined to go 6-for-6 from the line in the waning seconds to keep Jessup at bay.

In addition to Tengan, Bilello reached double figures for the fourth consecutive game with 16 points. Senior Chol Deng (Sydney, NSW, Australia) added 13 points and Corley scored 10 off the bench.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… As is tradition, we use the Bill James Safe Lead Formula in this space to determine when the game was over statistically. Friday at Jessup, that moment came with six seconds remaining when Jaden Tengan made the first of two free throws to extend the Otter lead to 76–69.

FROM WAY DOWNTOWN…  The Otters remain red-hot from long range to start the season. They made 10-of-24 from 3-point range Friday (41.7 percent). They've scored double-digit 3-pointers in all three games so far and are shooting a sizzling 46.8 percent from beyond the arc.

THREE AND OH… With Friday's 77–69 win at Jessup University, the Otters are off to their first 3–0 start since the 2008–09 season.

ROAD SWEET ROAD… The Otters won their first road game of a season for the second consecutive year. They defeated Central Washington in Ellensburg to kick off their road slate last season.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT…POINTS: Jaden Tengan 23; REBOUNDS: Mezziah Oakman 8; ASSISTS: Jaden Tengan 4; BLOCKS: Joey Bilello/Jackson Corley/Mezziah Oakman 1; STEALS: Joey Bilello 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue conclude their weekend in Rocklin with a neutral site game against Northwest Nazarene Saturday at 5 p.m.
