Missed Free Throws Costly In Loss To NNU

Three late misses allow NNU top escape, 83-80

ROCKLIN, Calif. — A 22-point night from sophomore Michael Mora (Palo Alton/Univ. of Vermont) couldn't overcome a late series of missed free throws as Northwest Nazarene rallied for an 83–80 win over Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday in Jessup University's Warrior Gym.

CSUMB (3–1 overall) appeared to be on the verge of pulling away for its fourth consecutive victory when it opened a 76–69 lead with fewer than seven minutes to play. But the Otters would miss six free throws over the final 5:25 of regulation — including three misses in the final 17 seconds — to allow NNU (3–1) to sneak away with the win.

Mora was one of four Otters to score in double figures Saturday against the Nighthawks. Junior Jaden Tengan (Sacramento/Santa Clarita Christian) followed his 23-point effort in Friday's win over Jessup with 16 Saturday. Senior center Mezziah Oakman (Columbia, S.C./UCSB) came off the bench to score his season-high of 16. Chol Deng (Sydney, NSW, Australia) reached double figures for the fifth time in six games with 10.

Mora led another strong Otter effort on the glass by matching his career high with nine rebounds. Oakman pulled down eight boards for the second consecutive game as CSUMB out-rebounded NNU, 39–31.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… As is tradition, we use the Bill James Safe Lead Formula in this space to determine when the game was over statistically. Saturday night against Northwest Nazarene, that moment didn't come until the clock showed all zeros.

FROM WAY DOWNTOWN…  The Otters remain red-hot from long range to start the season. Although they failed to make double-digit treys for the first time this season, they went a healthy 9-of-20 (45.0 percent) from beyond the arc vs. NNU. They made 10-of-24 from 3-point range Friday (41.7 percent). They'll enter the new week shooting a sizzling 46.6 percent from 3-point range.

TRIPLE-DOUBLE DIGITS… Four Otters scored in double digits Saturday against Northwest Nazarene: Michael Mora (20), Mezziah Oakman (16), Jaden Tengan (16) and Chol Deng (10). It marked the 10th consecutive game that at least three Otters have scored in double figures.

CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARDS… Michael Mora tied his career high with nine rebounds Saturday against Northwest Nazarene. He previously pulled down nine boards in a win over Sonoma State on Jan. 25, 2025.

THE FREE-THROW LINE IS A HARSH MISTRESS… With apologies to Robert Heinlein, the Moon isn't the only place that is a harsh mistress. The line was a harsh place for the Otters Saturday. They matched their season-best by shooting 72 percent from the stripe but missed four of their final eight with a chance to seal the win.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT…POINTS: Michael Mora 22; REBOUNDS: Michael Mora 9; ASSISTS: Jaden Tengan 4; BLOCKS: Mezziah Oakman 2; STEALS: Joey Bilello/Ariya Briscoe/Jackson Corley/Michael Mora 1.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 5-game roadtrip with a pair of games at the PacWest/CCAA Crossover Challenge Thanksgiving weekend in Atherton. The action kicks off against host Menlo College Friday (Nov. 28) with a 7 p.m. tip-off.
