ATHERTON, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball gave the CCAA's newest member a sneak preview of conference life by handing Menlo College an 86–76 defeat Friday night in Menlo's Haynes-Primm Pavilion.

Junior Jaden Tengan (Sacramento/Santa Clarita Christian) scored a season-high 25 points to lead three Otters in double figures. Sophomore Michael Mora (Palo Alto/Univ. of Vermont) battled foul trouble all evening, but still scored 15. Ariya Briscoe (Portland, Ore./West Valley College) came off the bench to add 13 points.

Although it goes down as CSUMB's second double-digit win of the season, this one was in doubt until the final minute. The Otters led for more than 36 minutes, but every time they appeared to be gaining separation, Menlo scrapped its way back to within a possession of the lead.

The Otters opened eight-point leads midway through both halves, but never could pull further away than that until Miki Gacic (Belgrade, Serbia/Asheville [N.C.] School) made a pair of free throws to extend the Otter lead to 84–74 with 27 seconds remaining.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… As is tradition, we use the Bill James Safe Lead Formula in this space to determine when the game was over statistically. Friday night, the win was secured when Miki Gacic made the first of two free throws with 27 seconds remaining to extend the Otter lead to 83–74.

FOUR AND ONE: The Otters find themselves with a healthy 4–1 record through the first five games this season. It's the first time they've been 4–1 since the 2008-09 Otters began the year a school-record 7–0.

LIVING IN THE 80s: By scoring 86 points in Friday's win over Menlo College, CSUMB now has scored 80+ points in four of the last five games. It's the first time they've scored 80+ in four out of five games in the same season since Nov. 29–Dec. 13, 2008. In case you're wondering, the last time they did it in five of six games was Jan. 11–26, 2008.

OTTERS GET HOT FROM THE LINE: Led by an 11-for-11 performance by Jaden Tengan, the Otters went a season-best 24-for-29 (82.8 percent) from the free-throw line in Friday's win over Menlo College. The 24 made free-throws are the most by an Otter team since going 25-for-29 against Cal State San Bernardino on Feb. 26, 2022.

TRIPLE-DOUBLE DIGITS: Once again, three Otters scored in double digits in Friday's win at Menlo College: Jaden Tengan (25), Michael Mora (15), and Ariya Briscoe (13). It marked the 11th consecutive game that at least three Otters have scored in double figures.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT…POINTS: Jaden Tengan 25; REBOUNDS: Mezziah Oakman 8; ASSISTS: Jaden Tengan 45; BLOCKS: Miki Gacic 2; STEALS: Joey Bilello/Miki Gacic/Michael Mora/Mezziah Oakman/Ashton Reese/Jaden Tengan 1.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 5-game roadtrip at the PacWest/CCAA Crossover Challenge Saturday, when they face another new 2026-27 CCAA member, Fresno Pacific University, in Haynes-Primm Pavilion. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
