Story Links

ATHERTON, Calif. — On a night when the shots weren't falling, the Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team used stifling defense and strong rebounding to roll past future CCAA foe Fresno Pacific University, 74–57, Saturday night Haynes-Prim Pavilion on the campus of Menlo College.

CSUMB improved to 5–1 overall, the second-best record in program history through six games.

While offense and rebounding had been CSUMB's secret sauce early this season, Saturday, the Otters turned to their defense when the shots weren't falling. They held the Sunbirds to opponent season lows for point (57), field goal percentage (38.9) and defensive rebounds (17).

CSUMB shot its own season low of 37.5 percent from the floor and 29.6 percent from 3-point range, but made up for it with an active defense and a season-high 51 rebounds, including a season-high 21 on the offensive glass.

Senior Mezziah Oakman (Columbia, S.C./UC Santa Barbara) did the yeoman's share of the board work, pulling down a career-high 14 rebounds to go along with 12 points for CSUMB's first double-double this season.

Sophomore Michael Mora (Palo Alto/Univ. of Vermont) matched his career-high with nine rebounds while scoring a game-high 18 points. Junior Joey Bilello (Littleton, Colo./ThunderRidge HS) also scored in double figures with 11 points.

CSUMB led for all but 90 seconds against FPU, but they Otters didn't put FPU away until consecutive 3-pointers by Jackson Corley (Napa/Vintage HS) and Mora gave them a 56–45 lead with 6:20 remaining. The lead never dipped below nine points for the balance of the night.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… As is tradition, we use the Bill James Safe Lead Formula in this space to determine when the game was over statistically. Saturday night, that moment came when an Ashton Reese three from the wing extended the Otter lead to 68–51 with 2:13 to play.

FIVE AND ONE: The Otters find themselves with a healthy 5–1 record through the first six games this season. It's their second-best start ever, trailing only the 2008-09 squad that opened 7–0.

CHAIRMEN OF THE BOARDS: CSUMB's 51 rebounds in Saturday's win over Fresno Pacific are tied for the 14th most rebounds in a game in program history. They were its most since pulling down 53 in an overtime victory against Humboldt State on Nov. 30, 2017. They were the most in a regulation games since they pulled down 53 in a win over Cal State East Bay on Dec. 20, 2014.

WELCOME TO THE DOUBLE-DOUBLE CLUB: Senior center Mezziah Oakman recorded his first collegiate double-double with 12 points and a career-high 14 rebounds in Saturday's win over Fresno Pacific. He is the first non-Australian Otter to record a double-double since Jailen Nelson with for 17 and 10 in a win at Cal Poly Humboldt on Jan. 11, 2023.

TRIPLE-DOUBLE DIGITS: Once again, three Otters scored in double digits in Saturday's win over Fresno Pacific: Michael Mora (18), Mezziah Oakman (12) and Joey Bilello (11). It marked the 12th consecutive game that at least three Otters have scored in double figures.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT…POINTS: Michael Mora 18; REBOUNDS: Mezziah Oakman 14; ASSISTS: Chol Deng/Miki Gacic 3; BLOCKS: Mezziah Oakman 2; STEALS: Jaden Tengan 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 5-game roadtrip and open California Collegiate Athletic Association play Wednesday (Dec. 3) at Cal State San Marcos. Tip-off will be at 7:30 p.m. as the nightcap of men's/women's doubleheader action
