Otters Find A Way Late, Tame Cougars 92-82

Closing 24-3 run lifts Otters in CCAA opener

SAN MARCOS, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay caught fire late to rally past Cal state San Marcos, 92–82, Wednesday night at the CSUSM Sports Center.

CSUMB trailed by nine with 5:32 remaining when a pair of Jaden Tengan (Sacramento/Santa Clarita Christian) free throws ignited a 24–3 closing run that turned a 77–68 deficit into a 92–80 lead. Michael Mora (Palo Alto/Univ. of Vermont) poured in eight of his game-high 24 points as one of five different Otters contributing to run.

The Otters swam upstream throughout the first half, with their normally potent long-range arsenal converting just 1-of-11 from behind the arc in the first 20 minutes. They shook that off quickly after the intermission, going 9-for-13 from 3-point range in the second half, including a 4-for-6 effort in their decisive run.

In addition to Mora, Tengan scored 18 points and Joey Bilello (Littleton, Colo./ThunderRidge HS) added 17. All nine Otters who attempted shots in the game scored at least three points.

Bilello pulled down a game-high eight rebounds and Mora passed a season-high four assists. Mezziah Oakman (Columbia, S.C./UCSB) chipped in a career-high three blocks.

With the win, CSUMB improved to 6–1 overall and 1–0 CCAA play. Wednesday's win was the Otters' third consecutive win and third consecutive road victory.

San Marcos dipped to 3–3 and 0–1.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… As is tradition, we use the Bill James Safe Lead Formula in this space to determine when the game was over statistically. That moment came when Jaden Tengan grabbed a defensive rebound with 15 seconds remaining and the Otters leading 89–80.

SIX AND ONE: The Otters find themselves with a healthy 6–1 record through the first seven games this season. It's their second-best start ever, trailing only the 2008-09 squad that opened 7–0.

THREE AND OH: The Otters are 3–0 on the road for just the second time in program history. The only other time they started 3–0 came at the opening of the 2021–22 campaign.

REBOUNDS? WE DON'T NEED NO STINKING REBOUNDS: The Otters entered Wednesday's action ranked No. 10 in NCAA Division II play with a plus-13.4 rebounds per game margin. San Marcos became the first team this season to out-rebound CSUMB, earning a slight 37–34 edge on the glass.

TAKING CARE OF THE ROCK: One solid way to overcome a slight rebounding disadvantage is to take care of the ball. The Otters did that to the tune of a season-low 11 turnovers in Wednesday's win at San Marcos.

TRIPLE-DOUBLE DIGITS: Once again, three Otters scored in double digits in Wednesday's win at San Marcos: Michael Mora (24), Jaden Tengan (18) and Joey Bilello (17). It marked the 13th consecutive game that at least three Otters have scored in double figures.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT…POINTS: Michael Mora 24; REBOUNDS: Joey Bilello 8; ASSISTS: Michael Mora 4; BLOCKS: Mezziah Oakman 3; STEALS: Michael Mora 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return to the friendly confines of The Kelp Bed to open a 3-game homestand with a rematch against Cal State San Marcos Saturday (Dec. 6). Tip-off will be a t 3p.m. as the nightcap of men's/women's doubleheader action.

GO OTTERS!
