Otters Tame Cougars Again, Sweep Season Series

82-75 win has CSUMB off to best start ever through 8 games

Story Links

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay matched its best start in program history with an 82–75 win over Cal State San Marcos Saturday evening in The Kelp Bed.

CSUMB improved to 7–1 overall (2–0 CCAA) by parlaying its Saturday victory with its 92–82 win at San Marcos Wednesday night. The Cougars fell to 3–4 and 0–2.

Sophomore wing Michael Mora (Palo Alto/Univ. of Vermont) completed his first collegiate double-double with a game-high 19 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. Senior center Mezziah Oakman (Columbia, S.C./UCSB) just missed his second double-double with a season-high 17 points and nine boards.

San Marcos used two early 3-pointers to grab a 6–4 lead, though it proved to be the only lead the Cougars would hold. For its part, CSUMB was able to grab leads of 12 points in the first half (36–24) and 11 in the second half (80–69). But the Cougars simply would not go away Saturday night.

The Cougars fought back to forge a 64–64 tie with less than seven minutes remaining. But a pair of Oakman buckets on CSUMB's next two possessions extended the lead back to four. San Marcos never held the ball with a chance to tie or take the lead again.

The Otters then made 6-of-8 from the line in the final two minutes to extinguish any hope of a San Marcos comeback.

In addition to Mora and Oakman, Jaden Tengan (Sacramento/Santa Clarita Christian) scored 14 points and Joey Bilello (Littleton, Colo./ThunderRidge HS) added 12.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Using the Bill James safe lead formula, the game was statistically over when Mezziah Oakman made the first of two free throws to extend the Otter lead to 77–67 with 31 seconds remaining.

BEST START EVER: With Saturday's 82–75 win over Cal State San Marcos, the Otters matched the 2008-09 squad with a 7–1 start through eight games. That's the best in program history. If you're keeping track at home, both the 2008-09 and 1998-99 teams started 7–2 through nine games.

HOW SWEEP IT IS: With Saturday's 82–75 win — and Wednesday's 92–82 win — the Otters swept the season series from an opponent for the first time since (checks notes) taking two from Cal State San Marcos during the 2023-24 campaign.

HE AIN'T HEAVY, HE'S MY BROTHER: This week marked the renewal of the Tengan rivalry as CSUMB's Jaden Tengan squared of against his brother, sophomore Max Tengan. Jaden improved to 4–0 all-time against his brother with this week's victories. Max redshirted last season and wasn't a part of the Cougar's two wins over CSUMB.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Michael Mora 19; REBOUNDS: Michael Mora 12; ASSISTS: Miki Gacic 4; BLOCKS: Mezziah Oakman 1; STEALS: Jaden Tengan 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… CSUMB will take some time off for final exams before returning to The Kelp Bed floor to host Chico State Friday (Dec. 19). They'll tip-off at 7:30 p.m. as the nightcap of doubleheader action with the Otter women.
