SEASIDE, Calif. — Chico State turned the tables on Cal State Monterey Bay Friday night, beating the Otters at their own game to earn a 79–62 win in The Kelp Bed.

CSUMB (7–2, 2–1 CCAA) came into the game ranked No. 11 in the nation by shooting 42 percent from 3-point range, while Chico was shooting just 29 percent. Thursday, the Otters connected on a season-low 27 percent from beyond the arc while the Wildcats shot a season-best 48 percent. That stat summed up the outcome.

Sophomore Cortevious Taylor enjoyed a banner night for Chico, pouring in a career-high 30 points on a career-best 7-of-10 3-point shooting. Senior center Mezziah Oakman (Columbia, S.C./UCSB) posted his second double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds for CSUMB.

A tightly contested first half saw the teams play through seven lead changes before Chico claimed a 31–29 advantage at the break. Things stayed tight through the early part of the second half until a quick 13–4 run gave the Wildcats their first double-digit lead at 56–44 midway through the period.

Chico eased away from there, slowly expanding its lead to 74–54 before settling on the 17-point final margin.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Using the Bill James safe lead formula, the game was statistically over when a Max Walters steal gave Chico possession leading 74–54 with 3:42 remaining.

BEST START EVER: Even with Friday's loss to Chico State, the Otters sit at 7–2 overall, tied for the best start ever in program history. If you're keeping track at home, both the 2008-09 and 1998-99 teams started 7–2 through nine games.

TRIPLE-DOUBLE DIGITS: Once again, at least three Otters scored in double digits in the Dec. 19 game versus Chico State. This time, the honors went to Mezziah Oakman (15), Michael Mora (12) and Chol Deng (10). It marked the 15th consecutive game that at least three Otters have scored in double figures.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Mezziah Oakman 15; REBOUNDS: Mezziah Oakman 10; ASSISTS: Miki Gacic/Jaden Tengan 3; BLOCKS: Chol Deng/Mezziah Oakman 2; STEALS: Ariya Briscoe/Chol Deng/Ashton Reese 1.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… CSUMB plays its final game of the 2025 calendar year when Cal Poly Humboldt visits Sunday (Dec. 21). Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. as the nightcap of doubleheader action with the Otter women.
