SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay delivered a strong scare to the 2023 NCAA Champion Cal State L.A. before losing in another five-set thriller, 23–25, 25–17, 21–25, 25–16, 15–12, on Friday night at The Kelp Bed.

Junior middle blocker Lilly Bandle (Jackson, Wisc./West Bend East HS) enjoyed a remarkable night for the Otters, posting career highs of 15 kills and 10 blocks. Junior setter Maya Cann (Chico HS/Feather River College) passed 28 assists to go along with a season-high 16 digs.

It wasn't enough to ground the Golden Eagle tandem of Ayjah Landers and Samarah DaCoud, who combined for 38 of L.A.'s 57 kills, with 21 and 17 respectively.

The Otters took early control of the match when three Bandle blocks sparked an 8–1 closing run that turned a 22–17 deficit into a 25–23 Set 1 victory. But the Golden Eagles turned the tables in the second set, using an 8–1 run of their own to break a 9–9 tie and roll to the win that leveled the match.

An 8–0 Otter run early in the third set erased an 11–6 deficit and the Otters wouldn't trail again en route to a 25–21 win that gave them a 2–1 lead in the match. The fourth set once again was L.A.'s turn for a run. This time it was a 7–1 spurt to finish the set and force the winner-take-all fifth.

The finale was tight throughout. The Otters took their final lead at 9–8 on a Landers hitting error. A pair of DaCoud kills broke a 10–10 tie and L.A. wouldn't trail again.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Forced to set out of system, Lilly Bandle was called for a ball handling error on match point.

TRIPLE THE FUN… Lilly Bandle became just the third player in Otter history to record 10 blocks in a match when she finished with two solos and eight assists Friday night versus Cal State L.A. The last Otter to do it was Melanie Lashbrook, who had 11 blocks in a win over UC Santa Cruz on Sept. 16, 2008.

DOUBLE THE FUN THE FUN… Lilly Bandle became just the second player in Otter history to post a kills-blocks double-double when she finished Friday's match versus Cal State L.A. with career highs of 15 kills and 10 blocks. The only other player to accomplish the feat was Christine Ricketts, who collected 19 kills and a CSUMB-record 16 blocks in a win over Cal State Stanislaus on Oct. 8, 2005.

CANN 11TH IN ASSISTS… With 28 assists Friday versus Cal State L.A., Maya Cann moved up to No. 11 on the Otter career assist list with 553. Next up is Aly Fullbright in 10th place with 786.

BANDLE CLOSING IN ON THE CENTURY MARK… With 10 blocks Friday versus Cal State L.A., Lilly Bandle raised her Otter total to 95 blocks. If you add in the 58 blocks she had as a freshman at Bemidji State, her career total is 153. That would rank No. 17 on the Otter career list.

OTTERS KEEP GOING THE DISTANCE: The Otters went the distance for the 10th time in 20 matches this season Friday against Cal State L.A. For those keeping track at home, that now stands alone as the second most times they've played five in a single season. The Otter record is 13 such matches during the 2013 campaign.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Lilly Bandle 21.0; KILLS: Lilly Bandle 15; BLOCKS: Lilly Bandle 10; ACES: Mia Dilley/Piper Olson 2; DIGS: Maya Cann 16.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 4-match homestand Saturday, when Cal State San Marcos visits for a rare 2 p.m. first serve.
