Otters Tame ’Cats, Run Win Streak To Three

Otters hold Chico to season-low 12 points in fourth set

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team used a solid all-around effort to run its winning streak to three match with a 25–22, 20–25, 25–22, 25–12 win over Chico State Saturday evening in The Kelp Bed.

The usual suspects led the attack, with freshmen Zoe Haan (Phoenix/Sunnyslope HS) and Juliette D'Eliseo (Carlsbad/Sage Creek HS) recording 16 and 15 kills, respectively. D'Eliseo and Lilly Bandle (Jackson, Wisc./West Bend East HS) led the net defense with four blocks apiece. D'Eliseo and libero Mia Dilley (Clovis East HS/Fresno CC) anchored the back row with 14 and 13 digs apiece.

The Otters took care of business Saturday by taking better care of the ball than Chico. The Wildcats hit .382 in their second set win, but hit just .102 the rest of the night with a total of 29 errors.

CSUMB, by comparison, hit an efficient .255 with just 15 errors in 149 swings. Those numbers included a dominant fourth set in which the Otters hit. 550 with just one mistake in 26 attempts.

The teams played through 10 ties and three lead changes in the opening frame. Chico opened an 11–5 lead in winning the second set. The Otters returned the favor by holding on to early leads in sets three and four to close the match.
 

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Juliette D'Eliseo and Talula Crandell combined to stuff Cashe Olswang at 12–8 in the fourth. D'Eliseo then went to the line and served five consecutive points to extend the Otter lead to 17–8.

TRIPLE THE FUN… The Otters ran their winning streak to a season-best three matches with Saturday's win over Chico State.

FOUR TIMES THE FUN… Saturday's 4-set win over Chico State marked the first time the Otters had ever defeated the Wildcats in four sets in The Kelp Bed. It also marked CSUMB's second-ever 4-set win versus Chico. The other came in a neutral site match at San Francisco State in 2021.

DILLEY UP TO 19TH IN DIGS… With 13 digs in Saturday's win over Chico State, Mia Dilley moved up to the No. 19 spot on the Otter career digs list with 556. She needs 44 more to become the 19th player in program history to record 600 digs.

TAKING CARE OF THE ROCK… The Otter committed just 15 attack errors in Saturday's 4-set win over Chico State. They were the fewest errors in a 4-set or longer match this season. The last time they committed fewer errors in a 4-set match came when they made 12 against Cal Poly Pomona on Sept. 9, 2022.

HOW LOW CAN YOU GO… After holding San Francisco State to an Otter opponent record-low two points in the fifth set Thursday night, CSUMB held Chico to an opponent season-low 12 points in Saturday's fourth set win. They marked the fewest point allowed by the Otters in sets 1–4 since limiting Sonoma State to 10 points in the second set of a 4-set victory on Sept. 30, 2023.

D'ELISEO DOUBLE-DOUBLE… Juliette D'Eliseo recorded her team-leading seventh double-double of the season with 15 kills and 14 digs in Saturday's win over Chico State.
