Otter Finish With A Flourish In Five

MB allows record-low two points in Set 5 to finish S.F. State

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay exorcised a season's worth of 5-set frustration with a glorious fifth set performance to defeat San Francisco State 27–25, 21–25, 25–20, 13–25, 15–2 Thursday night in The Kelp Bed.

Playing their ninth 5-setter of the season, the Otters came up just short time and again until everything fell into place against the Gators. Freshman Juliette D'Eliseo (Carlsbad/Sage Creek HS) served nine consecutive points as part of a 10–0 Otter run that turned the deciding set into a rout.

Freshman Zoe Haan (Phoenix/Sunnyslope HS) put down four kills in the set. Fellow freshman Talula Crandell (Loomis/Del Oro HS) served an ace on match point to start the CSUMB celebration.

The final two sets played the opposite of tight outcomes in the first three. The Otters saved two set point to win the opener. Late rallies by the Gators and Otters left the match score at 2–1 through three.

S.F. State appeared to take the match by the scruff of the neck after registering 19 kills and just one error in a tour de force performance to tie the match. But CSUMB turned the table with the match on the line to earn its second consecutive win.

D'Eliseo led the Otters with 17 kills and 19 digs. Junior middle Lilly Bandle (Jackson, Wisc./West Bend East HS) hit .533 with match-high six blocks.
 

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Thursday night's turning point came with Head Coach Courtney Materazzi challenged a line call on a kill by SFSU's Tamiya Wilson off an Otter block by Taluala Crandell and Malia Thorne. Replays confirmed the ball caught the line, giving CSUMB a 6–1 lead and keeping alive what became a 10–0 run that put the match on ice.

AN OTTER HIGH FIVE… The Otters had dropped seven consecutive 5-setters before exorcising those demons Thursday against S.F. State. They've now gone the distance nine times this season, second in program history only to their 13 5-set matches in 2013.

CANN PAASES 500 CAREER ASSISTS… Maya Cann became the 12th player in Otter history to reach 500 career assists when she dished 28 helpers in Thursday's win over S.F. State. She'll enter Saturday's match with 507 assists. She needs 30 more to pass Juliette Ward for 11th place.

HOW LOW CAN YOU GO… The two points allowed by CSUMB in Thursday's fifth set versus S.F. State were the fewest ever allowed by the Otters in fifth set. The previous low was four set against Menlo College in 2003 and at Notre Dame de Namur in 2009.

D'ELISEO DOUBLE-DOUBLE… Juliette D'Eliseo recorded her team-leading sixth double-double of the season with 17 kills and 19 digs Thursday versus S.F. State. Her 19 digs tied her season high.
