East Bay Earns Battle of the Bays Split

Three Otters reach double-figure kills in 4-set loss

SEASIDE, Calif. — After Cal State Monterey Bay swept Cal State East Bay in their first meeting this season, the Pioneers earned a measure of revenge with a 25–16, 24–26, 25–19, 25–18 win Thursday night in The Kelp Bed.

Freshmen pins Juliette D'Eliseo (Carlsbad/Sage Creek HS) and Zoe Haan (Phoenix/Sunnyslope HS) led all attackers with 16 and 14 kills respectively. Junior middle Lilly Bandle (Jackson, Wisc./West Bend East HS) reached double figures for the second consecutive match with 10.

CSUMB got off to a frigid start with 10 hitting errors in the opening set. The Otters found their sea legs in a thrilling second set victory, playing through 11 ties and five lead changes before pulling out a 26–24 win to even the match.

The Otters kept up their improved play for the balance of the match. The problem for Otter fans was that East Bay elevated its play as well, hitting .371 in the third set and .515 in the fourth to keep CSUMB at bay.

D'Eliseo added a team-high 16 digs to complete her fifth double-double of the season. She teamed with Bandle for three of CSUMB's five blocks. Freshman Grace Liesemeyer (Menifee/Paloma Valley HS) came off the bench to serve a season-high three aces.
 

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… East Bay stopped CSUMB's final run with three consecutive points to open a 21–15 lead in the fourth set.

AN OTTER TRIPLE-DOUBLE: Juliette D'Eliseo (16), Zoe Haan (14) and Lilly Bandle (10)  each reached double-figure kills Thursday against Cal State East Bay. It marked the fourth time this season that three Otters have reached double figures in the same match.

CANN MAKES THE TOP 20… With 45 assists Thursday versus Cal State East Bay, Maya Cann moved up to No. 19 on the CSUMB single-season assist list with 454. She needs 11 more to pass Dana Grimm (2009) for 18th place. With 46 more assists, she'll become just the 10th different player in Otter history to reach 500 assists in a single season.

CANN MAKES ANOTHER TOP 20… With 45 assists Thursday versus Cal State East Bay, Maya Cann posted the 18th most assists in a 4-set match in Otter history. The last Otter to do it was Ashley Vanderpan, who passed 46 assists in a 4-setter with Cal State San Marcos in 2023.

CANN CLOSES IN ON 500 CAREER ASSISTS… Maya Cann leaped closer to the 500 career assist mark with her 45-assist performance Thursday versus Cal State East Bay. She'll head to Saturday's match at Cal Poly Humboldt with 454. She needs 29 more to pass Ruby Ennis for No. 12 all-time.
