Cold-Shooting Otters Let One Get Away

Jones scores 21 but San Marcos rallies to win 71-64

SEASIDE, Calif. — An historically cold shooting night robbed Cal State Monterey Bay of a shot at its first home league victory as Cal State San Marcos pulled away late for a 71–64 win Thursday night in The Kelp Bed.

CSUMB went 1-for-19 from 3-point range, breaking a streak of 251 games making multiple 3-pointers (min. 10 att.) that dated back to February of 2014. The Otters went-0-for-10 from long range over the final 20 minutes as a 9-point, second half lead slipped away.

San Marcos, meanwhile, won the game from the free-throw line, going 27-for-30 from the stripe. The 27 free-throws were the fourth most in program history while the 90 percent rate was its highest (min. 20 att.) since 2017.

Thanks to its efficiency at the line, the Cougars won despite attempting 19 fewer shots and turning the ball over 10 times more than the Otters.

The final score spoiled an impressive night from senior Blake Jones (Canberra, Aust.) who scored a career-high 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting. He also matched his career high with three blocks.

Jaden Tengan (Santa Clarita Christian) came off the bench to score 14 points. Freshman Michael Mora (Palo Alto/Univ. of Vermont) added 11.

The Otters continue their 4-game homestand Saturday afternoon when they host Sonoma State. Tip-off will be at 3 p.m. as the nightcap of doubleheader action with the Otter women.
