Shots Fall, Otters Roll, 89–66 Over Sonoma

Six Otters score in double figures led by Ariya Briscoe (15)

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay bounced back into the win column in a big way, leading for almost the entirety of an 89–66 victory Saturday afternoon in The Kelp Bed.

Junior Ariya Briscoe (Portland, Ore./West Valley College) led six Otters in double figures with 15 points as CSUMB put up a season-high 89 on a season-best 55.7 percent (34-of-61) shooting from the field. Sophomore Joey Bilello (Littleton, Colo./ThunderRidge HS) added 14 points while freshman Michael Mora (Palo alto/Univ. of Vermont) just missed his first collegiate double-double with 10 points and a game-high nine rebounds.

Sonoma led 6–4 early before a quick 7–0 burst gave the Otters an 11–6 lead they would not relinquish. A Mora jumper got the lead to double digits 12 minutes in and the advantage grew to 42–21 by halftime.
The lead stayed between 20 and 29 points for the balance of the game.

Jaden Tengan (Santa Clarita Christian) scored 13 points and dished six assists. Jackson Corley (Napa/Vintage HS) made a career-high three 3-pointers as part of his 12-point day. Chol Deng (Sydney, NSW/Greyson CC) reached double figures for the third time with 10 points.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… As is tradition, we use the Bill James Safe Lead Formula in this space to determine when the game was over statistically. Saturday's game was over when Konner Baroni made a short jumper to extend the Otter lead to 73–48 with 8:26 to play.

OTTERS ON THE REBOUND: The Otters out-rebounded Sonoma 43–29 in Saturday's victory. The 14-rebound margin was CSUMB's biggest of the season. The Otters have out-rebounded their opponents in 11 of 17 games this season.

A SIX PACK OF DOUBLE-FIGURE SCORES: Six different Otters scored in double figures in Saturday's win over Sonoma State: Ariya Briscoe (15), Joey Bilello (14), Jaden Tengan (13), Jackson Corley (12), Chol Deng (10) and Michael Mora (10). It's the first time that has happened this season and third time at least five Otters scorers reached double figures.

DOING IT WITH DEFENSE: Defense continues to be a strong point for the Otters during their recent run of play. Saturday's 89–66 win marked the ninth time this season the Otters have held an opponent under 70 points.

OTTERS ON THE BLOCKS: With five blocks in Saturday's win over Sonoma State, the Otters vaulted all the way up to No. 8 on the program's single-season blocks list with 67.  At their current pace, they will become the third team in program history to record 100 blocks in a season. The school record of 109 was set by the 2005-06 team.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Ariya Briscoe, 15; REBOUNDS: Michael Mora, 9; ASSISTS: Jaden Tengan, 6; BLOCKS: Alec Zambie, 2; STEALS: Chol Deng/Michael Mora, 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 4-game homestand Thursday (Jan. 30) when San Francisco State visits The Kelp Bed. Tip-off will be at 7:30 p.m. as the second game of doubleheader action with the Otter women.
