Heartbreak For Otters In Overtime

Tengan scores 25 in 77-72 loss to S.F. State

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay lost a heartbreaker Thursday night as San Francisco State earned a split of the season series with a 77–72 overtime victory in The Kelp Bed.

Jaden Tengan (Santa Clarita Christian) surpassed 20 points for the fourth time this season, leading the Otters with 25. But Gator Tyjean Burrell did Tengan six better, pouring in a career-high 31 points. Caden Flowers scored eight of his 12 points in overtime to help SFSU secure the win.

The game featured eight ties and 10 lead changes as neither team ever appeared to take control until the final possession of overtime. The biggest Otter lead in the second half was four points and the biggest Gator lead was six, underscoring just how tight the game was.

The Otters forced overtime when Chol Deng (Sydney, NSW, Aust.) finished a sweet spin move in the paint to knot the score at 65–65 with 13 second remaining. An Ariya Briscoe (Portland, Ore./West Valley College) 3-pointer on CSUMB's first overtime possession gave the Otters their final lead at 68–65.

But Burrell scored all four of his extra-time points as SFSU quickly erased that deficit to take a 71–68 lead. The Otters pulled to within one twice in the final two minutes, but couldn't get over the hump.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… As is tradition, we use the Bill James Safe Lead Formula in this space to determine when the game was over statistically. Thursday's game wasn't over until the Otters turned the ball over inside the final 10 seconds trailing 77–72.

FREE THROWS ARE COSTLY: Free-throw shooting had been, arguably, CSUMB's greatest team strength this season, coming into the night shooting 74.1 percent, a mark that would rank third in program history. Thursday night, the Otters went 5-of-12 from the line in regulation, including 3-of-8 in the second half.

WORKING OVERTIME: Thursday's loss was CSUMB's second OT setback of the season. CSUMB's last overtime win was a 99–92 victory over Western Oregon in November of 2023.

DOING IT WITH DEFENSE: Defense continues to be a strong point for the Otters during their recent run of play. Although they ultimately allowed 77 points, the game marked the 10th time this season the Otters have held an opponent under 70 points in regulation.

JONES ON THE BLOCKS: With two blocks Thursday versus San Francisco State, Blake Jones vaulted from No. 17 to No. 13 on the Otter single-season list with 19 blocks. He needs three more to catch Greg Polosky (2017) for a spot in the Top 10.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jaden Tengan 25; REBOUNDS: Blake Jones 8; ASSISTS: Chol Deng/Blake Jones 4; BLOCKS: Blake Jones 2; STEALS: Chol Deng, 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 4-game homestand Saturday when Cal State East Bay visits The Kelp Bed. Tip-off will be at 3 p.m. as the second game of doubleheader action with the Otter women.
