Sosa, Day Hat Tricks Highlight Otter Day in Long Beach

Otters fall to CSUN and CMS to close opening weekend

LONG BEACH, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay got hat tricks from freshman Emma Sosa (Tustin/Foothill HS) and junior Autumn Day (Murrieta Valley HS) to highlight the final day of opening weekend for the 2025 water polo season.

Despite those efforts, the Otters fell to Cal State Northridge, 17–9, and to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 15–10, in a pair of matches played at Long Beach State's Lindgren Aquatics Center.

Day, who scored nine goals in Friday's season-opening split, recorded her third hatty in as many games with three more in the morning game versus Northridge. Sosa, who notched her own hat trick in her first collegiate game Friday versus Ottawa, scored four times in Saturday's finale against the Athenas.

Five different Otters scored in a 5-goal second period as CSUMB trailed Division I Northridge just 9–8 at the half. But the Matadors scored five unanswered goals in the third period to break the game open en route to the win.

The Claremont match followed the script of Saturday's opener, with the Otters trailing just 8–6 at intermission. Once again, a 5–0 third period by their opponents turned the tide against the Otters.

In addition to Day's hat trick, Stella Martin (Clovis West HS), Meg Gostanian (Visalia/Golden West HS) and Ximena Pichon (Clovis HS) each recorded two assists against Northridge. Allyson Ainsworth (West Sacramento/River City HS) and Kira Clark (Mission San Jose HS) supported Sosa's big game against Claremont with three and two assists respectively.

Freshman Marissa White (Mission San Jose HS) went the distance in the cage and made eight saves in each match.

Returns to the Otter Tank next Saturday (Jan. 25) for its 2025 home opener against Santa Clara. First sprint is scheduled for 1 p.m.
