FULLERTON, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay welcomed the 2025 water polo season with an opening day split in Southern California. The Otters began the season with a 22–9 win over Ottawa University before falling to host Cal State Fullerton, 13–5.

Both matches took place at the Fullerton Aquatics Center on the CSUF campus.

"There were a lot of positives today and a lot to be excited about," said CSUMB Head Coach Emily Schmit. "We were able to shake off the rust and made some strong defensive adjustments."

The 22 goals scored against Ottawa were the most ever by the Otters in a season-opener and the most scored in any match since a 28–6 win over Cal Tech in 2019. Sledding got a little tougher against Fullerton, but Schmit was pleased with that effort as well.

"Against Fullerton, we got the ball where we needed it to go, but the ball wasn't falling," said Schmit.

Junior Autumn Day (Murrieta Valley HS) had herself a, well, day, scoring nine goals, including six in the win over Ottawa. She chipped in a hat trick versus the Titans and recorded three assists Friday as well.

Freshman Emma Sosa (Tustin/Foothill HS) and Long Beach State transfer Alex Harris (Davis Senior HS) both added hat tricks against the Spirit and single tallies against Fullerton.

Schmit also singled out true freshman Abby Allen (Sanger HS) as the player of the game for her effort against Ottawa. Allen scored a hat trick to go with an assist and a steal against the Spirit, but those weren't the only things that impressed her coach.

"Abby had a strong first game, establishing a commanding presence in center," said Schmit. "Her positive, forward-thinking mentality the entire day stood out among many strong performances."

CSUMB trailed 2–1 early in the opener before Allyson Ainsworth (West Sacramento/River City HS), Day, Sosa, Shea Tully (Yucaipa HS) and Meg Gostanian (Visalia/Golden West HS) rained home five goals in a 3-minute onslaught that put the Otters in control. They led 12–6 by halftime and salted the game away with a 5–1 third quarter.

Goals by Harris and Day kept the Otters close early against Fullerton before three scores late in the second period gave the Titans a 7–2 lead at the half. The Otters closed to within four in the third period, but Fullerton scored the final three to secure the win.

Freshman goalkeeper Marissa White (Mission San Jose HS) saw the bulk of the action in the cage and made 14 saves, seven in each match. Fellow freshman Kendra Weaver (Valley Center HS) cleaned up at the end of the Ottawa game, making two stops along with recording a steal and an assist.
